St. Matthew's German Lutheran Church was a filial congregation of Trinity German Lutheran. Roughly in 1853 there was a theological split and part of the congregation established St. Matthews. The church was located only a few blocks from the original Trinity (which was on Trinity Street). St. Matt's was on Central at Fayette. During the early part of the 20th century the congregation changed denominations and became affiliated with the Evangelical and Reformed Church. Through denominational mergers, St. Matthews became part of the United Church of Christ (UCC). The congregation, now known as Cathedral Church of St. Matthew's UCC is located on Norman Ave in a beautiful facility. The complete run of these records was microfilmed about five years ago and are available from both the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis and through the FHC near you. The records are written in German but are easily legible. For those who are interested, I will be presenting two German-American genealogy talks at the upcoming FHC meeting in September. One is on G-A Churches in Baltimore City and the other on G-A Newspapers from 19th-century Baltimore City. By the way, if you search the archives for this list and it's competitor, you will find lots of discussions concerning St. Matthew's and other German-language churches in Baltimore City. It was in Baltimore City but I don't know an address or if records are still in existence. I just learned that my family attended.
