Her death cert. says she died in April, 1930, (shortly after the Census) of pulmonary TB. Could that be false? Was Springfield as notorious for abuse as other institutions, such as Rosewood? I have a story about Springfield. In the late 1960's My friend and with several of our children drove from where we lived near Baltimore to Springfield where she was entering her father for a stay to be treated for alcohol abuse. At this time it housed mental patients also. Well the kids were getting thirsty and the soda machine in the lobby was not working. Just then a young man walked by and I asked him where we could get drinks. He told me to go down the hallway and thru the double doors and there was a soda machine there. I did. It was a sort of lounge and several women were sitting around in the lounge chairs. I noticed that they had on the same shirt and stripped blouse. But thought nothing of it, I got the sodas and started back thru the door I entered in and it wouldn't open. One of the women said" that door stays locked" Right then I started to panic because I realized I was in the mental ward. At that moment a nurse walked in. She could see my panic. I told her I had come thru the door to get drinks and couldn't get out. She looked at me with my shorts and t shirt and said "You know where you are lady, I said "yes yes I want to get out" She opened the door and told me to be careful of where I went because the doors were not marked. Needless to say I took the kids and we all went to the car with the drinks and waited. I did not want them to get in the wrong part of the building like I had.
Love your story. I've forwarded it on to my cousin. I think he will enjoy it.
