Elias was Joseph's younger brother, 10 years younger. When the company became Newman & Brother was the year Elias started helping Joseph make pianos. The two of them built the Hollins Market in Baltimore. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Square,_Baltimore#Hollins_Market_2 They were there until around 1860 I believe, Baltimore was a Union town, and Joseph has Comfederate sympathies, I know this because he left with his family and came to live in Richland County SC, my friend who recently died had one of his pianos, it's a custom square that turns into a buffet table, made around 1848, so that's why I started researching the Newmans. My friend was 90 when he died and his grandparents had the piano custom made and sent from Baltimore. Joseph lived the rest of his life in SC as a farmer, but was buried in Baltimore. My email is debrahshaw@yahoo.com I have the email of his grandaughter somewhere I will try and find it for you. She knows more about Elias.
