    3. Hi Everyone, All of the census page images for 1790-1930 are online at the Internet Archive - http://www.archive.org (Note: no login or password needed) All of the Soundex index card reels for 1880 and 1900 are there too. 1910 is partially done and 1920 and 1930 are on the way. These index card reels provide a powerful name search for the heads of household. Each card shows the names of all of those living in the house, the city, ED, sheet number, and line number. So if you find the name you're looking for in the index, you can go to the census page images and find the census page. I've created ordered lists on my site to help you find the correct reels - http://census.donslist.net (Note: no login or password needed) Here's an example of how to use it if you're looking for William Marsch in 1880. 1 Go to my site and find the section of the page where there are 2 notes highlighted in yellow. The notes provide some guidance and include links to an explanation of the soundex codes and SteveMorse.org's soundex calculator. 2 Compute the soundex code for Marsch. I used the calculator; it's M620 3 Click on 1880 in the list of links between the two highlighted notes. A list of links for the states covered by the census will appear in the upper left frame. Click on "Index" for Maryland. This will bring up a list of links to the soundex reels for Maryland in the upper right frame. 4 Scroll through that list to find the one which includes the cards for M620. It's reel 30. Click on that link. A new window (or tab) will appear with the correct page from the Internet Archive. 5 Click on "Read Online" to open the archive's online reader for that reel. The link is to the left in the "View the book" block. 6 Search through the reel to find the card you want. A binary search is the fastest way. It takes a few minutes or less. Here's how it works. Use the slider to go about halfway through the reel. If you've gone too far, go about halfway back to the beginning, If you haven't gone far enough, go about halfway to the end. ... It typically takes 10-15 tries to find a card. The one for William Marsch turns out to be at page n1580 . Here's a direct link - http://www.archive.org/stream/soundex1880md030#page/n1580/mode/1up 7 The card shows him and household in Baltimore, ED 180, sheet 9, line 15. In the list on my site for Maryland (upper left frame), click on "Census". This will bring up a list of links to the census reels in the upper right frame. 8 Scroll through that list to fine the one which includes ED 180. It's appears to be reel 0504 assuming they mean Baltimore City. ... For 1900 you can do your search all on my site for Baltimore. I've rendered the census reels for 1900-1930 for the city and the soundex reels for the state of Maryland for 1900. You'll find links for these just above the highlighted notes on my census page. I don't have much time to respond to questions but perhaps there are others on the list who have used the soundex index cards in the local library and can help. Please feel free to cross-post this information to other groups. The Internet Archive reels are comprehensive; it's all there. 3. on the front page of rootsweb they have a search engine for soundex. If you want to save time and keep them for reference write down the name(s)you will research and find each one all at once. I keep all my surnames on a file for easier reference after getting them from rootsweb.
