Maps I have show a tollgate in District 1 in the County, as someone previously mentioned. It started in Ward 18 of Baltimore City. From Page 17 of "Difficulties Made Easy: History of the Turnpikes of Baltimore City and County," the first tollgate was moved before 1850 to the northwest corner of the turnpike and Garrison Forrest Road (now Franklintown Road). That is right near where Gwynns Falls crosses Frederick Road, very close to the city/county boundary in 1860. So they were in either District 1 of the County or Ward 18 of the City. Also, the book says that John Starr, born 1802-03, was the gatekeeper in 1858-59, resigning in 1866. So you might look for that John Starr. If correct, she should have lived near him. I did find a 13-year old Henry Brondean in the House of Refuge in the 1860 District 1 Census. If you don't find the rest of them and don't see Catherine in later City Directories, maybe something traumatic happened before the census?
