In the late 1960's My friend and with several of our children drove from where we lived near Baltimore to Springfield where she was entering her father for a stay to be treated for alcohol abuse. At this time it housed mental patients also. Well the kids were getting thirsty and the soda machine in the lobby was not working. Just then a young man walked by and I asked him where we could get drinks. He told me to go down the hallway and thru the double doors and there was a soda machine there. I did. It was a sort of lounge and several women were sitting around in the lounge chairs. I noticed that they had on the same shirt and stripped blouse. But thought nothing of it, I got the sodas and started back thru the door I entered in and it wouldn't open. One of the women said" that door stays locked" Right then I started to panic because I realized I was in the mental ward. At that moment a nurse walked in. She could see my panic. I told her I had come thru the door to get drinks and couldn't get out. She looked at me with my shorts and t shirt and said "You know where you are lady, I said "yes yes I want to get out" She opened the door and told me to be careful of where I went because the doors were not marked. Needless to say I took the kids and we all went to the car with the drinks and waited. I did not want them to get in the wrong part of the building like I had. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to MD-BALTIMORECITY-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

As many here likely know, the Maryland marriage index is now online on the state archives site. You can get there through this link: http://guide.mdsa.net/series.cfm?action=viewSeries <http://guide.mdsa.net/series.cfm?action=viewSeries&ID=SM225> &ID=SM225 They have put the microfilm images of the both the bride's and groom's indices into pdf files. I've rerendered these for my site to make them more accessible. The pdf's are 70 MBytes or larger whereas my site allows you to browse the images very rapidly. I've also created a searchable text index from the images. It's imperfect so don't be discouraged if you try it and you don't find what you're looking for. The images have either the brides or grooms in alphabetical order one year at a time so it's not hard nor time-consuming to search. I've finished the Bride's index and got it up on my directory page: http://Directory.DonsList.net <http://directory.donslist.net/> The Groom's index is in progress and should be finished in about a week. Here are direct links to what's up right now: http://www.donslist.net/PGHLookups/MDfem195162M.htm http://www.donslist.net/PGHLookups/MDfem196372M.htm It's divided into two pieces covering 1951-1962 and 1963-1972. Please cross-post to other Maryland groups about it if you feel it's appropriate. I am researching George Marion WALTER who lived in Baltimore, Maryland. He was born Dec 1843/1844. He married Mary Eliza WALTER ( a cousin) on 5 Nov 1866. He died on 7 Jan 1919. His obituary states that he was in the "Quartermaster's Department of the United States Army during the Civil War." I have searched for military records for George Marion WALTER to no avail. The 1910 census indicates that he was not a veteran of the Civil War. Do military or other records exist for men who worked in the Quartermaster's Department? If so, where would I find these records? Thank you so much for any insight that you can offer.
