I should have started the instructions from the home page. From www.familysearch.org (after you have signed in) click on United States, this will take you to the States page. Scroll down to Maryland, Register of Wills Books, 1629-1983 and click on Browse Images. This will take you to the Counties page. Click on Baltimore, This will take you to where I started in my previous post. The site seems to be adding new information/years every month. Once you do, there is a tremendous amount of information available. There are many stand-alone indexes and the books without indexes usually have an index either at the beginning or the end of the individual books. To find Samuel Blackard's Administration, I started with the Index to letters of administration, 1820-1839 vol 2. I found his name and the folio (11) and book number (10). With this information, I went to Administrations 1835-1840 vol 10. I plugged in the page number (11) and found Blackard, Samuel about halfway down the page. The information continues over onto page 12. This page is Maryland, Register of Wills Books, 1629-1983, Baltimore, Administrations 1835-1840, vol 10, Image 11 and 12 of 310. You can download the pages as a pdf file directly to your computer. If you have any trouble with the other references just post and I will walk you through the process. Also, most of these old maps did not have indexes to help find the streets. But from bits and pieces I've looked at, I think they were all with 3-4 blocks of each other, all probably in Ward 10 on the 1836 map. They were all near Howard, Richmond and Biddle streets, site of the Richmond Market shown on the map. Another nearby landmark was St. Mary's Seminary, a few blocks southwest, at Franklin, Paca and Ross Streets. Charles Street was the east boundary of Ward 10, with Ward 7 being on the east side of Charles. Pennsylvania Ave. formed the southwest border of Ward 10, with Ward 12 being below Pennsylvania ave. I hope this helps with the maps, but I think Dan Rhema's post will be more useful to you. John Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Their children Mary, born abt. 1844, Catharine born abt. 1848 and Bridget born abt. 1851 all report being born in Canada in later censuses. The family is seen in the 1860 census in Baltimore, MD. I have been unable to find the family in the 1851 Canada census (probably too early for youngest daughter Bridget). I am unable to locate Michael in the 1870 census, but in the 1880 census in Baltimore he appears with married daughter Catharine Stokes as a boarder. (His age is shown as 50 and is probably incorrect given he's shown as 40 years old in the 1860 census with wife Anna and children.) Looking for any additional information on Michael and his family. Wife Anna apparently died between the 1860 census and the 1880 census as he's shown as a Widower in 1880. Thank you! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. Re: [MD-BALTIMORECITY] 1820 Census ED map--printing maps ??
    2. John Siemon
    3. The maps I referred to are in various formats and printing capability varies. But almost all of the original maps were much larger than 1-2 pieces of letter size paper. So if you print them that way, the details will usually be so small that you won't be able to see them clearly. A better option for printing is to capture an image of a small part of the map that you are interested in and then pasting it into a Word document or similar file. If you have Windows 7, you can do this with the Snipping Tool that comes with Windows 7. If you don't have Windows 7, try the "Control/Print Screen" keys and paste the resulting picture into Word. Or use a great program called "SnagIt" to do this (you can Google it and try it for 30 days for free). If you don't know how to do any of these, I recommend you ask someone, because any of these are great methods of just capturing the portion that you are interested in and saving it. Author: DonnaCarter39 Surnames: Gorman, Blackard Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.maryland.counties.baltimorecity/8322.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi John. What I was trying to do in the most roundabout way, was to verify a family relationship between Mary Gorman and Peter Gorman. Mary Gorman married Samuel Blackard/Blackar at St. Peter's Church in Baltimore, 1820. Samuel is no where to be found in the City Directories around that time. Peter Gorman and Eliza Ann Browne marry in this same church in 1834. Gives potential to Mary Gorman and Peter Gorman being related. Many people way back when who married knew each other by living nearby. Also, many witnesses/sponsors in marriages/baptisms were either relatives or neighbors. A certain Hugh McCabe was present at both Samuel and Mary's marriage and birth of first child in 1820-1821. He's probably not a relative, therefore, I thought he might be a neighbor. Since Samuel Blackard can't be found in the city directories in 1820-1821, I looked for Hugh McCabe (and Bernard McDonald, another sponser)and found both men living within the intersection of Tyson and Richmond! Sts. My thoughts were to look through the 1820 census that covered these few blocks to see if Blackard and Gorman could be located. There's no specific number address for McCabe and McDonald, just "Tyson, n side e of Richmond" type. I think I found Bernard McDonald in the 10th ward of 1820, but no McCabe, Blackard, or Gorman. Would any other ward be worth looking through? Does Tyson/Richmond sit on the border of ward 10 or smack in the middle? I've looked through land records for any Black/Gorman homeownership around 1820, but found nothing either. a little much, wasn't that??? thanks for the help. I can use your information with other family research. : ) -Donna Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You can find 1836, 1863 and 1935 maps of the City here: http://www.mdslavery.net/html/mapped_images/bacmap.html All show the election Ward boundaries, but not the Enumeration Districts. Early Censuses (like 1820) did not have Enumeration Districts. You can also try the State Archives, Baltimore City Archives, Library of Congress, and other web sites. These and other places have detailed historic maps of Baltimore, some of which show the Ward boundaries. If all else fails, you can use Steve Morse's ED Finder tool at: http://stevemorse.org/ed/ed.php?year=1880&state=MD&keywords=&county=Baltimore This searches the ED boundary descriptions. You can change the census year at the top. Pick the city and state and then enter key cross streets near your address, separated by a comma. This usually narrows to a couple EDs. Use with a map to see which one contains your address. Remember that house numbers before 1887 were different than today. I can help you with that if you need it. Lastly, if you have a specific address and post it, I can probably identify the Ward it was in, especially before 1900. I've collected many maps and don't know exactly where I got them all.
