I reviewed the article and it appears it was at one time Washington Blvd before Columbia and I am not wondering if I am legally married since it closed in the 1940s. I was married there Sep 1947, but I thought it was odd it was in a hallway, sort of, (I called it a narthex because I didn't really know what to call it. I was not familiar with Baltimore -- fresh out of high school and commuting by Greyhound to work at Hess Shoe store and/or Hutzlers downtown. The book "Directory of Ministers and Maryland Churches They Served 1634-1990" by Edna Kanely lists"Ward, John L-(Meth) Mt. Lebanon, 1942; Columbia Ave., 1947". Your memory of the area is a little mixed up.The old Montgomery Ward building is on Monroe Street which intersects at about the 1700 block of Columbia Ave.(renamed Washington Blvd.in the 1920's). 655-657 Washington Blvd. is closer to downtown near Green Street (295 and Oriole Park). Here's an interesting note, as a kid I worked part time at 655-657 when it was a "Lion's Club" and at Montgomery Wards in the catalog department. Mary Edna Flannigain - correct spelling of surname - was born January 1870 in Balt. city to Andrew McElderry Flannigain born in MD and Nancy Caroline Shuler Flannigain born in VA. She was raised by her mother's baby sister in Kansas until 1892 when she arrived with this aunt in Balt. In 1900 Mary, known as MOllie, was living with an older sister of her mother in Balt. in ward 20. In 1910, her mother stated that she had two (2) living children which leads me to believe Mary is alive but I can no longer find her. Thus, I think Mary/Mollie MAY HAVE MARRIED but I have no idea to whoM. THERE IS A MARY E. FLANIGAN age 39 married to DENNIS l. FLANIGAN WITH NO CHILDREN IN HOUSEHOLD IN ward 21 (which is the ward next to where Mary/Mollie was in 1900)OF Balt. city in 1910. THERE IS A MARY E. FLANAGAN age 60 married to THOMAS FLANAGAN WHO WOULD HAVE MARRIED IN 1893 with several children in Balt. city in 1930. Can you possibly help me to eliminate either of these couples who may include her???????? Mary's/Mollie's mother lived to be past 100 years old and died in Prince George's county in April of 1944. But I/nor librarian in Virginia Room in Fairfax? can find an obituary for Nancy Caroline Flannigain. Mary's sister died in 1933 so Mary may have been the one who looked after her mother until her death (Nan was in a nursing home). Mary was working as a clerk when the 1900 census was taken. I most sincerely would appreciate assistance in determining whether Mary Edna Flannigain actually married and maybe some day I will learn when she died and where she is buried so I can put her to rest. I am trying to ascertain the name and denomination of the church that was in Baltimore in September 1947 on 655 Washington Blvd, officiating was J. L. Ward. The church wasn't too far past the old Montgomery Ward building, however, on the opposite side of the Blvd. I also remember that as it was heading out of town, the Greyhound Bus Co. used to have a pick-up stop near the church. I didn't go to the church, but worked in the city and was referred to it and married in its lobby/narthex, and I need the name and denomination to do further research. Donald: First German Reformed Cemetery is not the same as Schwartz Cemetery: that was the cemetery for First United German Church (never a part of the Reformed denomination but very specifically independent of any governing synod) It was founded in 1851 on Eastern Ave (which still exists in the original building but is today a part of the UCC. I believe First German Reformed Cemetery was located nearby to the current Schwartz Cemetery (named after an early minister) For years the city used it to bury indigents. Last I heard it had been sold to a developer and no records or tombstones were known to have survived, but you could inquire at First and St.Stephens UCC on York Road, this congregation was formerly First German Reformed Church (most German Reformed congregations were merged by their own choice into the UCC (United Church of Christ) in the early 20th century.
