    1. Finding Aid for Sydenham Hospital Records 1909-1949
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: FRENCH, BYRNES, ROACH/ROACHE/ROCHE, GILMORE, DANDY, SIMMONT, GRIMES, FELL, CONWAY, TRAVERS Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AFB.2ACI/4719 Message Board Post: I came across this link while looking for something else. Sydenham in Baltimore was an infectious disease hospital before antibiotics were available. Apparently some patient records were saved and might be obtainable. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/hmd/manuscripts/ead/sydenham.html My mother believes she got diptheria as a youngster from the sewage discharge from Sydenham into Herring Run near her house. Of course we'll never know for sure, but it is an interesting theory.

    1. Re:Seaman's Union Bethel Church, corner Bethel and Aliceanna
    2. Christine: You're correct, Seamen's Union Bethel no longer exists and it was (as of its demise) associated with the Methodist Church. The Methodist Archive at Lovely Lane in Baltimore unfortunately has no church registers belonging to this congregation. Despite it's name, it seems to have served as a community church as well as a Seamen's church. To my knowledge, no records have survived. (Seaman's Union Bethel Church at the corner of Bethel and Aliceanna in Baltimore City - I don't think it exists anymore) More specifically, are there any records available? I've searched the MD State Archives Church records list, the MD Historical society library catalog, and the Family History Library catalog. I'm not sure if there are other places I should be searching. I've figured out that this is a Methodist Episcopal Church (I think). So far I've only been researching in Lutheran Churches (I'm very German), so I don't know what other resources are out there for Methodist Episcopal. Thanks Christine

    3. Get a list of current and old Baltimore cemeteries and find out which ones were around in 1888. Then call each and see if you can locate the three graves. 1. RE: [MD-BaltimoreCity] Re:Seaman's Union Bethel Church, corner Bethel and Aliceanna
    2. Hi, That was destroyed, true, but did that church move back in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century to E Cross St where it was known as Sailors Union Bethel Church? That church was affiliated with the Methodist church at first, being home to what were called "Shouting Methodists." Today that church stands as a landmark and is called (because of a pastor who came and went quickly) to Bible Baptist Church. The church, I believe, was and is independant. Some of my family went there in it's Shouting Methodist days. If this is the second location of the church you name it is possible records are there. As the church was so unlike the mainstream Methodists of it's day it may not have had affiliation the Methodist Episcopal. They are very rich in tradition and the last I was there even had a large ship hanging from the ceiling. I have a feeling they might even have old records. You could try. The Methodist Archive at Lovely Lane in Baltimore unfortunately has no church registers belonging to this congregation. Despite it's name, it seems to have served as a community church as well as a Seamen's church. To my knowledge, no records have survived. 3. FYI -- The Baltimore County Public Library has a Legacy Web Site of old photos. Go to http://external.bcpl.lib.md.us/hcdo/lw_home.html and type in GARRETT. You will get 27 hits. Thomas Work Garrett, 1820-1884 (Photo 2246012). His estate "Montebello" was located entirely within Baltimore County at that time (Photo 2246010). You may also find some of the other hits to be of interest. Maybe this will be of some help in your research. The census page says Supervisor District 1, Enumeration District 245 in the "country" of Baltimore County. Garrett is famous for the mansion Evergreen over by Johns Hopkins in the city, but that home was for his son.
