It is in jpeg2000 format so you will have to download the free viewer if you want to download the atlas pages for later viewing on your computer. It contains Baltimore City and the surrounding counties separated into districts that match the census districts as far as I can tell. In addition, the maps show the property owners of large tracts of land. In a previous post, I was trying to determine where John W. Garrett of the B&O Railroad lived because my ancestor was in the 1880 census just a couple pages from Garrett. This atlas shows exactly where Garrett's property was. So using the 1880 census I should now be able to figure out more closely where my ggrandfather lived using his neighbors. I don't have the url handy but I googled the Library of Congress and then put Baltimore in the search to check out what they had online - which is a lot. Definitely a c! ool site if you have not visited it.

Hello, My second genealogy book has gone to the publisher! The Lauer, Borgmeier, Bauer Families and the MacCubbins traces these families from Germany to Baltimore, Maryland during the years 1650 to present. This book traces the ancestry of William Edward Lauer back to his 5th great grandfather, Nicolaus Lauer, born about 1665 in Stürzenhard, Germany. Nicolaus was great grandfather of Simon Lauer, who immigrated to Baltimore, Maryland in 1852. The Borgmeier, Bauer, and Würz families are also documented back to their German homeland. The MacCubbin family is followed from the immigrant, John MacCubbin, through his son, William, to Mary Susanna MacCubbin Lauer. For more information, please contact me directly at nanlauer@comcast.net. Thanks, Nancy Waters Lauer This message is posted with the approval of the list administrator

Would like to contact anyone researching the McKinney surname in Baltimore. Specifically I am looking for information about Samuel H. McKenney (died 1919) and Josephine McKinney (died 1925). I believe one of these is connected to the Hagan line of Baltimore.

Hi, Here is an old posting I made about German research in Baltimore. It can be found (along with all the other posts) in the Archives at www.rootsweb.com. I don't know much else about Germans in Baltimore. Good luck! Also, you can go to www.rootsweb.com<http://www.rootsweb.com/> (the link might look "doubled," so just use 1/2 of it!), click on Mailling List Index, find Maryland, find Baltimore, and scroll down past the subscribing info and you can search or browse the archives back through many years and see all the posts relating to Germans in Baltimore (or any other topic) --there is a lot of info there! Mona Everett Date: Sun, 18 May 2003 21:13:33 -0500 From: "mona everett" <cowpost@msn.com> To: MD-BaltimoreCity-L@rootsweb.com I came across a thesis titled Congregation and Community in Baltimore 1840- 1860, by Michael Stephen Franch. It had a lot of interesting info about early churches (all denominations, races, cultures, and languages) and other aspects of religion and life in Baltimore. One page was a table listing German Language Congregations, which I will copy here: (The headings are Name, Denomination, Founded) Zion, Lutheran, 1750 First, Reformed (1), 1757 Otterbein, United Brethern (2), 1771 St. Johannes (3), Catholic, 1800 Baltimore Hebrew, Jewish, 1829 Second (St. Paul's), Lutheran, 1834 Fell's Point Hebrew Friendship, Jewish, 1838 Trinity, Lutheran, 1839 Luther Chapel, Canton, Lutheran, 1840 Emmanuel, Evangelical Association, 1841 Har Sinai, Jewish, 1842 St. Johannes, Reformed, 1845 German Mission, Methodist Episcopal, 1846 St. Johns, Lutheran, 1847 West German Mission, Methodist Episcopal, 1848 Second, Evangelical Association, 1848 Good Samaritan (4), Lutheran, 1850 St. Stephen's, Lutheran, 1850 St. Michael's, Catholic, 1851 Howard Street (4), Jewish, 1852 First United, Evangelical Association, 1852 St. Matthew's, Lutheran, 1852 Oheb Shalom, Jewish, 1853 New Jerusalem, Swedenborgian, 1854 Beth Israel (4), Jewish, 1856 St. Paul's, Reformed, 1856 Holy Innocents, Catholic, 1858 His footnotes: (1) An English language congregation after 1827 (2) Founded as a German Reformed congregation (3) Building demolished in 1842, replaced by a new structure, and rededicated in 1845 as St. Alphonsus (4) A short-lived congregation. One fascinating feature of this thesis is the maps he included, which show the location of the churches and the area the congregation was principally drawn from, as well as maps that show the relocation of many of the churches as the city expanded. This thesis is on microfilm, so it might be possible to borrow it through inter-library loan from the Wisconsin State Historical Society Library, although they are closed for a month, so I am not sure how that affects their ILL policy. If nothing else, the bibliography is a gem for folks researching their ancestor's religion in Baltimore. Hope this helps.
