Whether Nathaniel Burgess was the father of both has long been a question I have been trying to answer. As you indicated in the 1900 census they were married only 5 years which could indicate Nathaniel is not the father. But in 1910 they say they were married 30 years which would mean they married they year Emma Marie was born. Emma Marie is my Grandmother. Please email me directly at ihowens@hotmail.com and we can compare notes.

I have had that same scenario, however I was fortunate that the ship's log actually indicated the relationship and showed "brother in law" for the sponsor. Otherwise, I would have never known.

The 1900 census says that Nathaniel and Louisa have been married 5 years and the 1910 indicates they have been married for 30. They appear to have died sometime between 1910 and 1920. Are Nathaniel's parents John D. & Eliza Burgess? Louisa and Nathaniel appear to of had only two children, Maria and Ethel. Which do you descend from? Have you discovered Levy Fossett's parents or slave owner(s)? My relationship is through Louisa's oldest sister, Mary.

Stefanski is that he was listed as their contact? sponsor? in the ships log. Upon landing my grandfather Karl Marschall married Henriette Kodder the next day. He was a widower. Karl died in 1925. Albert had died in 1919. My father Carl and our family were in Iowa in 1936. There is also quite a list of Stefanski's and their date of immigration at. http://www.castlegarden.org/ So I have a lot to look into. Regards, Richard Marshall

For the STEFANSKIs, I found Cecelia (widow of Thomas), h 2509 Fleet St., also at that address: Benj (tailor), Eleanor (photographer), and George R. (laborer). For MARSCHALL, I found Carl (Thereasa), tires 3738 Bank r Eastern and Steward Av. The 1936 directory is also a reverse directory so I checked 2509 Fleet (which was originally called Canton St) - no additional people are listed. At 3738 Bank, this appears to be his tire business, and a Mrs. Rose Streckfus also lives there. I didn't find the intersection of Eastern and Steward. I wonder if they re-numbered when they changed from Canton to Fleet. There is another STEFANSKI at 1704 Fleet. This is Raymond, a barber, and his son, Ray Jr., also a barber. There were no KODDERs in the 1936 directory and no Albert MARSCHALL but a few Albert MARSHALLs. Maybe these clues will help you make a connection.

St. Matthew's German Lutheran Church was a filial congregation of Trinity German Lutheran. Roughly in 1853 there was a theological split and part of the congregation established St. Matthews. The church was located only a few blocks from the original Trinity (which was on Trinity Street). St. Matt's was on Central at Fayette. During the early part of the 20th century the congregation changed denominations and became affiliated with the Evangelical and Reformed Church. Through denominational mergers, St. Matthews became part of the United Church of Christ (UCC). The congregation, now known as Cathedral Church of St. Matthew's UCC is located on Norman Ave in a beautiful facility. The complete run of these records was microfilmed about five years ago and are available from both the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis and through the FHC near you. The records are written in German but are easily legible. For those who are interested, I will be presenting two German-American genealogy talks at the upcoming FHC meeting in September. One is on G-A Churches in Baltimore City and the other on G-A Newspapers from 19th-century Baltimore City. By the way, if you search the archives for this list and it's competitor, you will find lots of discussions concerning St. Matthew's and other German-language churches in Baltimore City.
