Hello all, I copied the index of names in the St. Brigid baptism register for the years 1858- 1866. The first page on my microfilm is too light to read, so there are no names starting with A or B. Some of the writing is very hard to read, so some names may be wrong. Hope it helps someone. Betty, I found an 1852 map with the wards marked on it. Here's a link. You can probably google a better version of the map that you can blow up to see street names and maybe even features like churches. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b4/Lucas_Baltimore_1852_Cityplan. png Michele -----Original Message----- From: md-baltimorecity-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:md-baltimorecity-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Betty Lou Michelman Sent: Thursday, September 07, 2006 4:07 PM To: MD-BaltimoreCity-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MD-BALTIMORECITY] Ward 19 - 1850 Census? For the 1850 Census, can anyone tell me what section of Baltimore City Ward 19 was in? I am also interested in knowing the names of any German Lutheran churches in that area. Thank you Betty Lou Michelman Fort Myers Beach, FL bettyloum@att.net
Hi Betty Lou, It's been a long time since we've heard from you. I've been wondering how you are doing and was happy to see your post. Ward 19 was in the far northwest corner of the city, bounded by Baltimore Street, Fremont, Pennsylvania, North Avenue, and the western boundary of the city. You can drill down to see a good 1865 map that shows the Wards at: http://mdslavery.net/html/mapped_images/mapsindex.html While the map shows a lot of streets in Ward 19, I think those in the far north were not developed in 1850. Some of those old maps showed planned streets in the suburbs that had not been completed yet. One church I see on Sachse's 1868 Birdseye view is St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Saratoga and Schroeder Streets. The MD Genealogical Society has started posting some of Pauline Leitner's transcriptions, including those from St. Paul, at http://www.mdgensoc.org/ As far as other German Lutheran Churches in that area, Gary Ruppert has posted much information in messages on the list over the last couple years. You might search the list archives for "German Lutheran" or "Ruppert." Better yet, Gary is giving a talk on Baltimore's German Lutheran Churches at the local genealogy workshop this Saturday. I plan to attend and will try to ask him about northwest churches. He's also giving a talk on German newspapers that I am looking forward to. I remember that you said that you had gotten lookups in them at the Pratt library from a lady that could read German. Was that Pauline? According to an 1852 map of Baltimore in the David Rumsey map collection on the web site www.davidrumsey.com, the 19th ward was located in what was then the northwest corner of Baltimore. From my reading of the map, it appears the ward is bounded on the north by North Avenue, on the south by Lexington St., and on the east by Pennsylvania Avenue. Hope this helps, John Otto Va. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AFB.2ACI/4741.2 Message Board Post: I checked my 1936 Baltimore City Directory and there is no Robert and Frances Boone. However, on a whim, I checked for Cisna and there is an Elmer C. Cisna married to Matilda living on 108 S. Loudon Ave. in 1936. He was a boilermaker. In the 1930 census, Robert O. Boone was a welder for the "steam railroad", renting a place on 1702 Hollins in Baltimore. Also in 1930, Elmer (born 1882 in Illinois) was listed as a boilermaker for the B&O RR living at 153 Palorma with his wife and kids in Baltimore. These two addresses are about two miles apart along Frederick Rd. I am wondering if Elmer is related to Robert's wife, Frances. He's potentially old enough to be her father, although his wife in 1930 is young (could be a second wife though). In any case, it's another clue to follow up on.
