Each state has differing laws with regards to privacy. Maryland death certificates are private for 20 years. 1986 death certificates should be available to the public on microfilm at the archives in Annapolis at the beginning of 2007. You would need to know the month of death and county or Baltimore City to isolate it. They are listed by month, subdivided by county, then alphabetical. Cost of printing from microfilm at the archives is 50 cents a page. Earlier years have been indexed and can be ordered through the following site. Cost is $12 per certificate. _http://mdvitalrec.net/cfm/index.cfm_ (http://mdvitalrec.net/cfm/index.cfm) Florida, for which I have received several death certificates, has no time limit with regard to death certificates (unless recently enacted). However, the cause of death is private.for 50 years and will not be on the copy you receive. They have a PDF request to fill out and mail in. Social Security Applications often turn up surprises. My mother always told me her given name was Ida Fern. When I got her Social Security Application, I was surprised to learn that her given name was really Ida Frieda. Nancy Lynn
Again I am grateful for the wealth of valuable information kind listers have provided for me on the above subject. I can see I am going to have to go down the death notice route in the case of the two more recent deaths I am interested in. Hi, Instead of sending for a social security number, go to your local Social Security office and ask if she had a number. Won't cost you anything, and you will get your answer much faster. My father had a social security number, but worked for himself and did not pay in to social security. Therefore, he did not collect anything. When he died social security was not notified, and they did not know he had died. Because of that, I could not get a copy of his application. But I did have his card and number when I was told by one clerk that he did not have a card. I went to our local SS office and got my information within 10 minutes. Jane, It is probably easier if you go to the site and search it yourself. This is the Maryland Real Property Data Base. http://www.dat.state.md.us/sdatweb/datanote.html Click on "Real Property Data Search" Then use drop down menu to find Baltimore City and click on "street address" Then enter house number and street You'll find info on the address, including that the current house was built in 1935. Ham, Here is info you may already have, but just in case. In the 1880 Census, Andrew and Maggie Rowe and their children are listed in the 15th Ward, Precinct 5. The street is hard to read, but I think they lived at #62 Camden Street. That appears to have been a large building that was renumbered to 125 and 127 W. Camden when the City renumbered all of its addresses in 1887. It was between Hanover and Sharp Streets, on the south side of Camden. From the 1890 Sanborn map, all the buildings in that block had storefronts, which means they may have lived upstairs. That block is now the site of the Baltimore Convention Center. In the 1890 City Directory (at Ancestry), Andrew Rowe had 2 addresses. From the Sanborn map, it looks like 1 W. Camden (sw corner of Camden and Charles Streets) was his business address, and they lived at 520 Hanover Street, which was between Welcome Alley and Lee Streets. I've downloaded the 2 1890 Sanborn maps that show where they lived in 1880 and 1890 and will send them to you off the list.
