There weren't any James Perigo/Perago's in the 1830 or 1840 census records in York County, but there were some in Maryland around 1832 when this will was proved, which leads me to believe that this Elizabeth Perago may have been in Maryland at the time the will was proved, possibly seperated from her husband. Did she remarry after this will was proved and move back to York County with a son James S Perago? Lots of unanswered questions??? Keith H Perago

However a few years ago, I came across a will in the York County Archives, the will was for a Lewis Small and in the will is listed a daughter Elizabeth, wife of James Perago. At the time, they wouldn't allow me to make a copy of this will, so I don't have a copy of that document today. This discovery, however, caused me to do some research on this Small family (Small which may account for the 'S' as James Perago's middle initial.) I found that this Elizabeth Small (born Martha Elizabeth Small)had been living in Baltimore with some older siblings between 1810 and 1820 so is it may be possible that she met a James Perago in Baltimore, married and had a son James S Perago on 2-18-1819?? I couldn't seem to find her or this elder James Perago anywhere afterwards in York Co or Maryland, other than mentioned in this Small will. So did this Elizabeth Small Perago die soon after the birth of her son ?? or did this marriage to this older James Perago end up in divorce ?? I don't know and unfortunately, have not had the chance to pursue this Small family route any further. Food for thought?? Now I'm itching to get to York and do some research on this Small line again!! Keith H Perago Harrisburg, PA (I descend thru James S Perago's youngest son, Kerwin, by his second marriage)

Later, Thomas and Harriet Ann Gist's son John T. Gist testified that he was nephew of James. This would make Harriet Anne a sister to James. However, the record of her marriage shows her as Harriet Smith. Perhaps she was a half-sister to James with separate fathers.

His first, Mary C Grove, died in 1854, four years after the birth of their child Anna Caroline. In her will, housed now at the York County (PA) Archives, she leaves her estate to her husband James. James and Mary Grove had four children, all who lived to adulthood, married and had families of their own: 1) John Calvin, 2) Sarah Rebecca (marred ti Daniel Hartman and Abram Street Gemmil), 3) William Harvey and 4) Anna Caroline (married to William Hudson). After Mary Grove Perago's death in 1854, James moved from Fawn Twp in southern York County to York City. The children, being young and without a mother, were divided up amongst Grove relations in southern York County and Maryland, which is why they are not with James in the 1860 census records. James married in York City, the second time, to Mary Magdalena Miller, daughter of Ludwig (Lewis) and Catherine Shenberger Miller. James and Mary Miller Perago, had 6 children: 1) Charles Lewis, 2) Ida Elizabeth (married to J Victor Sponsler), 3) Jacob Miller, 4) Fannie Jane (died as an infant), 5) Harry F and 6) James Kerwin (my great-grandfather).James and his second wife raised these children in York City. James appears to have maintained a relationship with his eldest childen as they are mentioned in his obituary in 1893 and the obituaries of the various children mention siblings from both marriages. As I stated, I am a great-grand son of J Kerwin Perago, thru his son George Perago. I have additional information on these families if you would be interested in sharing. The 4 children from the previous marriage can be found living with other relatives in 1860. Saw this on another list: Ancestry.com has extended the free search of the Immigration Records through the end of December, so you have another month to check out the collection and find some of those lost ancestors. I was surprised that they had ships that sailed into Southern ports and California (as well as, New York, Baltimore, etc.) This is one of those really free no credit card promotions (not like a free trial). You just need to give them your name and email (and no credit card) and you can start searching the entire immigration collection. Here's a link to the promotion and more details. I believe the home is located in Harford County, though I may be wrong. It is, as you say, a home for the elderly members of the Masonic Order, and is supported as one of the charities of that Order. The main office of the Order is on north Charles Streetm in Baltimore City and they should be responsive to an inquiry from you for more information. Hope this helps Nelson At 04 45 Friday 12/1/2006, you wrote: >Does any one know anything about the Bonny Blink Masonic Home in >Baltimore? I think it was a retirement home. There are two very brave man buried in Baltimore: Nathan Tiernan Walton, VMI Class of 1867, cemetery unknown Robert Montague Blundon, VMI Class of 1867, cemetery unknown We need photos of the graves. The VMI Corps of Cadets fought as a unit at the Battle of New Market, Virginia, on May 15, 1864. Two hundred fifty seven cadets were on the field. Ten cadets were killed in battle or died later from the effects of their wounds; 45 were wounded. The youngest participating cadet was fifteen; the oldest twenty-five. Two VMI alumni are attempting to obtain photos of the graves and biographical of all 257 cadets who fought in the Battle of New Market in the Civil War. This is a HUGE task. RAoGK has offered to help with the database. You can visit their web page at http://www.augustagavmiaa.info/ and click on the New Market Cadet database. Read about the battle at http://www.vmi.edu/archives/Civil_War/cwnm.html . Hopefully someone on this list has the time to locate and photograph the grave. We welcome any additional biographical information not in the VMI archives or "The Corps Forward" by Couper and Gibson. If in doubt, send what you have and we will compare it. ;-) Please send to me, sarahreveley@grandecom.net . I will then combine all the data on him and send it to them. They contacted me about my ancestor George Francis Reveley, who was a cadet then, and I volunteered to help them get the other graves photographed, knowing we have so many wonderful people on Rootsweb that will help. ;-) Thanks, Sarah Reveley San Antonio, Texas sarahreveley@grandecom.net

I'm looking for James Perago, too, born about 1825 in Maryland, married to Mary. I think there may have been two James/Mary Perago families, though, and maybe you can help me clear up some confusion. I see on the 1850 Census James and Mary having four children: John age 6, Sarah age 4, William age 2, and Caroline age 3 months. None of these children show on the 1860 Census, which I'm sure are "my" Perago's (James age 29, Mary age 24, and Charles age 10 months). Is it possible that the children on the 1850 Census either died or were living in another home? I descend from Ida Perago, born about 1862, daughter of James and Mary. She married J. Victor Sponsler. What's your connection to the Perago family? Reply to Treenut: Thank you for the followup. It possibly could be him (alth' I have a different birthdate). My grandmom's step-mom/aunt - Katie was a Catherine I'll have to dig up her birthdate if I have it. I remember when she died years ago, no one seemed to know what her age was. John Duvall's 1st wife was named Annie or Anna (my grandmom's mom whose maiden name I had never heard)) and John supposively married his wife's sister Katie (my grandmom'saunt) Possibly August was related to John Duvall's 1st wife. Others listed in the 1900 census where John is listed as a widow are daughters: Lillie, Maggie (my grandmom) Sylvester, Arthur, Adelaide; housekeeper Kate Bird; Boarders: Esther Bird, August Poster, Annie Brown, Alice Unthanks, Laura Chaney and Francis (or Frannie) Davis. (Census 1900 - Baltimore, Maryland 13th day of June 1900, Second Precinct, Supv. Dist 3, Enum Dist 20, Sheet No. 21.) At Maryland Archives in Annapolis, I found a 3 x 5 index card (can't find my notes, but a different spelling) re immigration and went through the book (Balto.? Court) they gave me but we couldn't find any reference in the book to him or any name close to the variable spellings..
Do you have any relatives names? What is John Duvall's wife's name? This looks like him. 1880 Dist 1 Balto MD August POSTAHR, 50, widow, born Prussia, parents born Prussia, laborer Anna, daughter, 18, MD, father Prussia, mother Prussia, keeps house Hannah, dau, 16, MD, works cotton factory John, son, 12, MD, " Catharine, dau, 10, MD, attends school ~Kathy treenut@bcpl.net > Message: 4 > Date: 28 Nov 2006 06:25:50 -0700 > From: FrostysPen@aol.com > Subject: [MD-BALTIMORECITY] Poster or variable spellings > To: MD-BaltimoreCity-L@rootsweb.com > Message-ID: <MB05bmNmgHvnRQgukfM00001125@MB05.myfamilysouth.com> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII > > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AFB.2ACI/7397 > > Message Board Post: > > Trying to locate family or relatives of August Poster, w, m, b. 1825 > origin Germany who resided as a boarder with the John Duvall family > (father of my grandmother Maggie Ellen Duvall) on 1900 census An old > telephone directory amongst my deceased mother's papers had a listing for > Robert & Leona Posther, 738 E. 36th St., Baltimore, MD 21218. > Other surname spellings which may or may not be applicable to August were: > Posteher, Postelier, Posther, Postlier and possibly Posehn found in an > immigration book arriving from Sask. whose parent was listed as Gottlieb > Posehn) with an August listed as a son (German). > > >
