Hello, I have no idea when this item became available, but if you go to rootsweb.com you will see a new beta Mailing List Archiver Search that allows you to search ALL lists at once for keywords, subject, etc. That means, if I put in "copper workers," I get all the messages for all the lists that related to copper workers. This is a wonderful invention, as I do not belong to all the lists (obviously) and others on different lists might have info I can use. In the past, you would have had to individually search each of thousands of lists. Anyway--just a word of warning--one can spend a lot of time there, seeing what others are writing and asking about! This really isn't a surprise. Ellicott City was known as the "Marriage Mill." You didn't have to wait the customary 3 days after getting a marriage license if you married there. My grandparents, Ruby (nee Reinhold) and Jacob Parker Eberwein, Sr., went there to get married, did so and then returned to their own homes. It was a "secret" wedding. When the marriage licenses were published in the Baltimore paper, a neighbor told Ruby's father who told her to tell my grandfather to come live with them and work in his bakery. I believe the main reason for the 3 day wait was that you needed a blood test to get married. They were looking for communicable diseases from typhoid to syphilis, and non-communicable things like mental defects. Frankly, the only explanation for many of my family branches is that, in Maryland, the blood test and 3 day waiting period was not required and therefore mental challenges were disregarded. It would at least explain how I think on a regular basis. <grin> Bonnie -------------- Original message -------------- From: Margaret I Obert <board-obert@verizon.net> > This may come as a surprise, but they were married in Howard County, > MD, on 24 June 1908. The pin is from Mount de Sales Academy, which at that time was a boarding school run by the Visitatin nuns. I'm sure some students commuted and did not board. The school still exists but the Visitation order relinquished control about 30 yrs ago as their members were all quite elderly. It is now run by a school board and administered by the Dominican Sisters of Nashville. The address is 700 Academy Rd., Catonsville, MD 21228. They have pictures of the graduating classes hanging in the main hall. If the owner of the pin was a relative, you might be able to get a copy of the class picture. The pins changed every few years. If the shield is a pierced heart and cross, that is the shield of the Visitation order.

Even if someone died intestate, there should be Orphans Court records and possibly Administrative Accounts. Those records may indicate who received the proceeds from the sale of the house. Also, the Maryland Assessments and Taxation website would list when the house was sold, with the deed book and page, and the price. You may find all the heirs listed on the deed. If, for some reason, Sarah E. Doyle did not collect Social Security payments, she will not be listed on the Death Index. My father did not collect, as he had not paid in enough, therefore Social Security was not notified of his death. When holding his social security card in my hand, I called the ss office only to be told that he did not have a number and if I had a card, it was not a legal one. Needless to say I went to the local office and found that he did have a number, but did not collect, therefore he was not listed as dead. When I went to the office, he would have been well over 100 years old. I was not able to get a copy of his application, because he did not collect. Betty > I searched the Social Security Death Index, Ancestry's phone Directory > covering the 1990s and the Baltimore Sun Archives (for a death notice) and > did not find a listing for a Sarah E Doyle that died in Baltimore City in > 1999 (which doesn't mean it isn't true, just that she was not listed on > any > of those.)
There are some Doyles who used to live in Elkridge, Maryland in the 1970's. Wonder if they are connected. Maybe you could check that area.
Marion, 429 E Lafayette St is in Baltimore City, just west of Green Mount Cemetery. It is in an area that is one of the most blighted in Baltimore City and has been for many years. The Maryland Real Property Database lists owners who live somewhere else, so it is a rental property. Many homes in that area are vacant and boarded up. Houses on both sides of it are owned by Baltimore City, most likely because owners gave them up. Normally, the record lists when it was last sold, but no date is listed for that address. I searched the Social Security Death Index, Ancestry's phone Directory covering the 1990s and the Baltimore Sun Archives (for a death notice) and did not find a listing for a Sarah E Doyle that died in Baltimore City in 1999 (which doesn't mean it isn't true, just that she was not listed on any of those.) If you do a Google search for "probate records Baltimore", you will see some services that you pay for a search of public records. I do not know if it is worth it for probate records, but it's a possibility.
