Of course. I'm not very organized. Otherwise I would have saved your email address. I have other pages to type but this one page took a long time so I won't be doing the pages each and every day but, whenever I post them, you can use them on the Baltimore city Web site. Whichever way you decide to do it we will live with. I'm grateful to think that so many more records will be available on-line and thank you for your work. Diane Hettrick dhettrick@earthlink.net
Diane: To answer your question, no there would be no individual cemetery pages - searches only would show links to pages where a particular name appears and it would include that name as surname, given, middle or maiden, or if it appears in the notes or anywhere else on the page. What you would get when you enter the cemetery name in the search engine is several results showing where the cemetery name is listed, so if there are 5 people buried in a cemetery all with different surnames, you'd get 5 pages to click on. Not one with an entire cemetery listed. Our search feature is a simple one, no Boolean or advanced features. If you are searching for JACKSON and on the S page there is a SMITH, John Jackson that would be included in the search results. Or on the M page if there was a listing for MARTIN, Elizabeth and the notes area it said D/O John & Mary Jackson Smith you'd get a link to the M page as well when searching for JACKSON. I should tell you that this is a small, rural (I think farming type) county. Total population is about 50,000. Small cemeteries, some having only a couple of folks buried in them. Only 1 or 2 moderate sized cemeteries (one is a modern memorial park). Nothing like BA City with huge cemeteries, no military cemeteries, a moderate sized modern memorial park. The advantage of an alpha listing is that it's easier to find the spelling variants because they tend to be closer together, i.e. Dowden and Dowdon. I am assuming that we could do a search which would pull up all the names in one cemetery, if we wanted to browse? At least the cemetery name would always be spelled the same way for a search, as opposed to our surnames. Diane Hettrick dhettrick@earthlink.net

I agree alphabetical would be best with the name of the cemetery listed. It would be helpful to include the plot number where available. That would help with connecting people with different surnames who are buried in the same plot. Jean: This is a small rural-farming type county in TN, approximately 50,000 in population, 5 primary cities/towns. There will be no plot numbers, limited notes, no indication of who is buried next to who or shares a tombstone and in fact no actual inscriptions from the stones other than 'son of' etc., military designation, age, etc. In other words, there will be no way to know who is connected in one cemetery other than they are all buried there. And you will miss the ones whose names you do not know. So you wouldn't know if neighbors and friends are buried in the same cemetery unless you went to the trouble of looking up those surnames too. My choice is the following because we may not know the name of the cemetery, only the name of the person we are searching. 1. In alphabetical order by surname with cemetery name listed (for those MD researchers familiar with 'Names in Stone' by Holdcraft, this would be an electronic version of a layout like in that book) Cherry
Alpa order by cemetery would be best of the two choices. If a MySQL data base could be used that would be even better. ________________________________________________________________________ Check out the new AOL. Kathi, Any possibility of providing the information in a (downloadable) excel spreadsheet? This would allow people to sort it however they choose (name, cemetery, any other data). Thanks for all your work on this project - you do a great job! An entire county of tombstone transcriptions (42,000 entries) (no photos) presented: 1. In alphabetical order by surname with cemetery name listed (for those MD researchers familiar with 'Names in Stone' by Holdcraft, this would be an electronic version of a layout like in that book) 2. Separated listings for each cemetery I'd like to know which of those two formats would be your preference and which would you think most people would prefer to see on a tombstone transcription site.
