    2. Lee Cool
    3. John Michael Maisch MAISCH, John Michael, pharmacist, born in Hanau, Germany, 30 January, 1831. He was educated at the scientific schools of his native town, and after participating in the liberal agitations in Germany during 1848-'9 came to the United States in the latter year and acted as a clerk in Baltimore, Washington, Philadelphia, and New York. He was professor of materia medica and pharmacy in the New York college of pharmacy in 1861-'3, and then became chief chemist of the United States army laboratory in Philadelphia. This office he held until 1866, when he became the proprietor of a pharmaceutical establishment in Philadelphia, and professor of pharmacy at the Philadelphia college of pharmacy. Since 1867 he has been professor of materia medica and botany in that institution. Professor Maisch disposed of his business in 1871, and during 1870-'81 had charge of the chemical laboratory of the Philadelphia college of pharmacy. In 1871 he received the degrees of Phar. M. and Phar. D. from the Maryland college of pharmacy. He has been very active in the American pharmaceutical association, and its permanent secretary since 1865, having charge of the editing of its annual volume of proceedings. He was also one of the committee of revision of the "United States Pharmacopoeia." His original investigations in technical pharmacy have been many, and have reference to improved processes of analysis, botanical methods, and chemical researches. These for the most part have been published in the "American Journal of Pharmacy," of which he became editor in 1870. He has edited " Griffith's Universal Formulary" (3d ed., Philadelphia, 1874)," The National Dispensatory," with Alfred M. Stille (4 eds., 1879-'86); and "Manual of Organic Materia Medica " (3 eds., 1882-'7). Edited Appletons Encyclopedia, Copyright © 2001 VirtualologyTM

    3. There are websites online that have information on Civil War military and the pensioners...If you google you will find loads. Thru them you can search the files and see if your ancestor is there. One more piece of the puzzle might be found.

    1. [MD-BALTIMORECITY] New poster/ Maisch surname
    2. kate
    3. Hi all- My name is Kate, and I have been working on my father's genealogy for almost a year. I discovered as of yesterday, that I have a German ancestor who immigrated in 1849, and landed in Baltimore, then eventually made his way to Philadelphia. His name was John Michael Maisch, and he was born in 1831 in Germany. I believe he was married in Baltimore, to a Charlotte Justine Kuhl, in 1859. I am unfamiliar with searching for marriage records in Baltimore, could someone point me in the right direction? Also, is there a good online database for German Immigration through Baltimore? And, should I be searching for him as Johann? I'm not sure if he was naturalized, I know his wife was, but I don't know if he was. I'm assuming he was because he took part in the Civil War. Thanks! Author: AMeadows Surnames: Cropper, Cully Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.maryland.counties.baltimorecity/4742.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thank you for this great information! My wife's gg-grandparents were George Reuben Cropper (b. circa 1857) and Sarah Anne Cully. This George Reuben Cropper was a son of the Reuben Cropper who died in Cecil County in 1888, and I assume was also a son of Emily who died in 1878. George Reuben Cropper and Sarah Anne Cully were married 2 September 1884 in Galena, MD (from "According to the Church" by Trish Surles, and from a marriage certificate, both of which were sent me after my posting). George Reuben and Sarah had two children: Sarah Emma Cropper (my wife's great-grandmother) and (another) George Reuben Cropper (1886-1918). Sarah's husband George Reuben Cropper walked away from the family, probably sometime around 1890, and was never heard from again. I have been unable to find out what happened to him. Sarah remarried in 1894, to a Sylvester Price. The 1870 census (Baltimore) shows, in the household of Reuben and Emily, in addition to children Susan and Reuben, a Joseph, Mary, and John. When Reuben (b.circa 18280 died he was living in a tenant house at Mt. Harmon in Cecil County and was making his living as a fisherman; son George Reuben (b. circa 1857) was living with him. Sarah Cully lived in Kent County but her father Joseph was also a fisherman - I am guessing that that is how the two families met. My wife and I have not as yet visited the cemetery in Baltimore (we live about 50 miles away but are not real familiar with driving in the city - and I must say are a little hesitant to do so). I would love to trade information with you. I can be contacted at: ameadows@dol.net Thanks again for the information! City MD. He is buried with his wife Emily Cropper, B:1834 D:Oct 5, 1878 and Buried in Western Cemetery in Balto. City. Her death certificate is CR 48053 #27957, City of Balto, Oct.5, 1878. She was 44 years old. Reuben and Emily's daughter Susanna Cropper, B:April 6, 1853 D:May 19, 1893 also buried in Western Cemetery -- she is my gggrandmother. Susanna married William Henry Connelly. The Reuben Cropper you identified as dying in Cecil County, MD in 1888 is obviously this Reuben Cropper. Note that the cemetery plot shows her buried on 10/7/1878 in Western Cemetery #253 S; lot purchased by Mrs. M. Stockett in 1856 (name as KROPPER with CROPPER in ()-- the cemetery plot is NOT marked with a tombstone. I visited it and the caretaker showed me where it was. The caretaker's house is right in the cemetery if you ever go to visit. I do not know how Sarah Anne Culle! y fits into the picture. Perhaps Reuben remarried after Emily died. You are correct that Reuben's father was Stephen Cropper born around 1802 -- I located him on the Balto. City 1850 census -- shows him as not being able to read or write; living with 2 sons William and Ruebon -- I believe there may have been another son, Stephen B: abt 1839 who married Louisa Lang B:abt 1851. I have been unable to locate much more info. on Stephen Cropper Sr. -- i am unsure of who his wife was at this time. If you have more information to share on the family I would love to have it for my research. I have more information on Reuben and Emily's children and on Susanna and Wm Henry Connelly's children if you are interested. Hope this info. helps.
