Since cemeteries and mortuaries are now included in the latest amendments to HIPA (Health Information Protection Act, 01 May 2003), they can face serious federal fines and lose their licenses if they release private information to unauthorized individuals. Some of them, especially the smaller ones, still do it, but they may eventually get caught. NOTE: This is NOT the same as HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, amended 2005). So, this is the 2nd reason why they are so stingy with their information. The 1st is that they can't or don't charge for their lookups, as a courtesy or service to the families, so they arn't making any money with their time. I notice , however, that Holy Redeemer in Baltimore does now charge $15 for up to 3 or maybe 5 lookups. Hi, I have been to Baltimore Cemetery and found some early ancestors who were buried there before Mt. Carmel opened. The people in the office were helpful--both in person and by mail--but pretty secretive with the actual records. Although they did provide me with copies. My question is: Has anyone ever been able to actually look through the records there--without having the man in the office do it and bring out whatever he finds? It took me several years and visits before I found my DAVIS/DAVIES people because the original record had been mis-transcribed. Instead of listing "David Davies" in the plot on the date he was buried, it listed "Mrs. Davies" a few days before his death. Likely she knew he was dying and bought the plot. The original record was correct and showed David as being in the plot. This is something I would have been able to pick up on immediately, if I had been allowed to see the original records, or even the transcritions. I now have another person to hunt for there, but do not have an exact date of death (although I can probably limit it to one year) and no first name--just surname DAVIS/DAVIES. I can approximate her age from those of her husband and 2 young boys. If I could look thru the original records myself, I could probably find her. I can't imagine the office looking with just this info. What do you think--I'll be out in Baltimore again in August or Sept. Should I try to convince them to let me search? I would still gladly pay them. Thanks! Mona
Listers- is there a site where I can input ALL 3 of my ancestors names as a family group that I know travelled together? Otherwise, I get too many "hits" because their names are Mary, Patrick and Kathryn/Kate SULLIVAN, arrived 1864 or 65, from Ireland, eventually landed in Balto. Thanks, Kathy treenut@bcpl.net

Reportedly owned by John Donnell. Left Baltimore late 1811 and arrived Valparaiso, Chile in Feb 1812. Captain Richard R. Boughan. Date of return uncertain. I have found quite a bit of information for you, including the exact location of Hewlett's house in 1850, what church Van Bokkelin was at, positions Hewlett held and when he died. It is too much info to put on the Message Board and you have kept your email address private. If you want the info, please send me your email address. If you are doing Baltimore research, you might consider subscribing to the Baltimore mail list. Rich, Maryland State Archives has old divorce records. http://www.msa.md.gov/ On the left side of the page click Reference and Research, then click Divorce Records. You might find other items at the Md State Archives website of interest too. Here is the site for Baltimore City Schools... http://www.bcps.k12.md.us/ If they cannot answer your question, you might call the Baltimore City Archives. The City Archives has the old school board minutes but I don't know whether the historical student files are kept there. Baltimore City Archives, 2165 Druid Park Drive, Baltimore, MD 21211, Phone: 410-396-0306 (you may get an answering machine). You need an appointment to see the facility because it is not open on a regular basis.
