Author: agategs Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.maryland.counties.baltimorecity/8023.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Looking up in "The Very Quiet Baltimoreans" from 1991, there were a few potter's field cemeteries: Eastern Potter's Field - "It adjoined Maryland Hospital, a smallpox hospital. On the Poppleton map of 1851, it was shown as bounded by Jefferson Street (N), Ann Street (E), Orleans Street (S) and west to Broadway." East Potter's Field - "The Lucas map of 1852 put and East Potter's Field on East Preston Street (N), Chesapeake Street (E), Chase Street (S), and Rose Street (once Mine Bank Lane) (W). This cemetery once adjoined St. Alphonsus III Roman Catholic Cemetery." Western Potter's Field - "was created in 1872 on the site of what is now Cherry Hill Junior High School." "The Lucas map of 1836 shows a potter's field on Sterrett Street (W), Cross Street (N), West Street (S) and Burgundy Street (E). This cemetery existed from at least 1822, but was gone by 1896." "In 1948, the city's last potter's field was established, but that name was discarded and the new name was Baltimore Public Cemetery. It is located on Quarantine Road on the farthest reach of Curtis Bay." Hope this helps! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I just checked mapquest(my grandparents once lived nearby) and the location I remember was at the corner of Waterview Avenue and Annapolis Road. The Cemetery is marked as Mt Auburn Cemetery. It was once so overgrown with weeds etc that you could not find anything as far as headstones or marked graves go! I am quite sure there are more cemeteries similar to this in the Baltimore area, but I am no expert. I would check some of the larger cemeteries in Baltimore IE Loudon Park perhaps they can tell you the history of the "Potter's". Let me know if you find anything of interest.Email me at [email protected] Regards, Barry Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He went by Lee most of his life. I do not know when he died but his granddaughter said that her mother told her that he was buried in a Potter's cemetery in Baltimore because the family had no money. Does anyone know where such a Potter's Cemetery would be located and if there is any way to search for the grave through the internet or by contacting the cemetery personnel. 1. [MD-BALTIMORECITY] Nicola Walter and Descendants book
    2. Mark & Dawn
    3. Hello, I am searching for anyone who may have a copy of the book, Nicola Walter and Descendants, by Helen B. Walter and published in 1973 by Gateway Press in Baltimore. I realize that the Family History Library has the book on microfilm, but I am unable to go to a Family History library at this time. The closest public library to me that has the book is 366 miles away. I am most interested in source information for John Wilhelm "William" WALTER and his two wives and children. William Walter was born in 1786 in Pennsylvania and died in 1848 in Baltimore. His second wife's name was Mary Ann McGinnis. I do not know his first wife's name. If anyone has any source information from that book, I would very much appreciate the information. I will be happy to share the information I have collected on descendants of William Walter. Thank you, Dawn

    1. Re: [MD-BALTIMORECITY] Baltimore Sun online
    2. Nancy: A lot of the old newspapers, including the Sun beginning 1837 are available on-line from the Balto.Co. Public Library, but you need a library card to log on. The web site is [1]www.bcpl.info then click on Research Databases on the left side. I have been using it and it works very good. When I put in search criteria, I only use the last name and no dates. For some reason if you put in dates, the search shows now results. I called a local Branch 410-887-0295 in Essex, Md. to get my information. I live in Harford Co., so I had to get signed in at a local branch with my Harford Co. card. I would call the library and I am sure they can give you some direction on how to proceed. 1. [MD-BALTIMORECITY] Charles Hubbard, John Fletcher, Maria, and Jona -- Slaves in Maryland
    2. Nancy Lauer
    3. I have a will from John Armstrong, 1858, where he leaves the above named slaves to his sisters (Ann and Rebecca) until the death of sisters when he wants the slaves to be freed. He also accommodates the slaves with $150 each. In the will, he includes some additional information about the slaves. John Armstrong owned a 240 acre farm in Baltimore County off of Reisterstown Turnpike. If anyone is researching these people: Charles, John, Maria, or Jona, I can provide you the information contained in John Armstrong's will. Please forward this to any other mailing list where there could be researchers interested in the above name people. Nancy [email protected]
