Worldconnect/AWT Submitter Surname Search http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/ss?words=zalner If that does not work and if no one can find an obit, other options that would cost but probably answer your question would be to either order a copy of John's death certificate or his SSA5, his social security application. The SSA5 is $27, but gives the applicants' parents' names. http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com I did quickly check GenealogyBank, but do not know if they carry the paper for 1971. Their only hit for John Zalner was the Soc Sec death index. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Sometimes you get lucky. I have found obits by just going to google, typing in the person's name plus obit and it comes up. Not always but it is worth a try.

    3. It depends on how far back you want to go. Current obituaries for the past 30 days are free at http://legacy.com and include a major portion of newspapers in the USA. Many people who pass away in Florida have obituaries in the New York Times because they have gone to Florida for health conditions, but still have friends and family in New York. Since the NewYork Times is a major US newspaper, chances are excellent that you can get access to it for free from a library in Australia, hopefully from home. Call your local library reference desk for assistance with that. I also believe that Mormon Family History centers subscribe to some of the pay sites that have older obituaries. Check with your nearest one (if there is one close enough to you there), to see if they carry any of the Newspaper Archive databases for patrons...Proquest and Newsbank are the ones that come to mind which libraries carry. There are many pay sites, as well, but if you are creative about it, you can find other ways to get the same obituaries for free, although not as easily as those of us living in the US. For example, Ancestry.com also has obituaries for selected locales and the FHC's usually have access to it. Also check Joe Beine's site http://deathindexes.com for the very best resource there is to locate death index and obituary sites for the USA. More information about all of the above, including information about library sites with home access to genealogy databases, is at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thecohens/resources.html Search engines also sometimes keep cached copies of older obituaries, especially ones relatively recent. Try using your favorite search engine, in case someone has posted a needed obit somewhere on the web. If that becomes tedious, try the focused genealogy tool at http://www.sfgenealogy.com/php/focus/youfocus.php On 1/1/11, Valerie B Garton <[email protected]> wrote: > ... > I am looking for obituaries in Florida, California, Indianapolis and > Illinois from to-day and backwards.

Searching for common names without a specific date is a time-consuming search that could miss them. A better search might be done if you narrow the dates a little better. Here's the death notice for the Gordon Smith who died Nov. 21, 1948: Smith--On November 21, 1948, GORDON, of 1147 Gorsuch Avenue, beloved son of the late Catherine Smith (nee Davis). Funeral from Clarence F. Hoffman Funeral Home, 1639 Broadway, on Wednesday at 11 AM, Interment in Baltimore Cemetery. If he's not the Gordon Smith you are looking for, I recommend you search the Baltimore City Death Certificate Records at http://www.mdvitalrec.net/cfm/index.cfm. I searched the 1934 records and did not find a Gordon Smith listed. You might find him in years near that. John Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. We located the books at the Baltimore County Genealogical Society, but they have a very limited schedule. Check their website for info: http://users.datarealm.com/bcgs/bcgs.html They also have *some* of the indices for the graves at Mt. Carmel in their database, but I found the folks I was looking for (and more!) in an unlisted supplemental volume. This one deals specifically with graves disturbed, moved or near the I-95 roadwork. Be advised that Mt. Carmel is still in awful shape but it is getting better. And the place is tiny compared to modern cemeteries. I was able to copy maps at the BCGS, but was still lost as the roads are mostly gone. In a moment of divine intervention, a caretaker showed up a few minutes after we arrived and pointed the way for us. Only a few of our graves had markers, but I was able to find a family member who had "disappeared" on us. Happy, happy! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Maryland archives has a Gordon Smith date of death November 21, 1948 death certificate number G68819. This might be the one you are looking for. I did not check out the archives just the index. Since you have this date of death I found (might be the person) you can check with the Enoch Pratt Library and see if the have the obit and then you can see if it is the one you are looking for. 2. Hello, My suggestion is to visit the websites of the public libraries in the towns you are interested in in those states. Generally they will have an email link and you can "Ask a Librarian". Every library is different, but most will be helpful and if they can't find an obit, may have good suggestions. There may be a small fee to cover copying or mailing. My next suggestion is to contact the State Historical Societies or Libraries in those states. They will also usually help, but may charge more. Another source (I haven't used it in awhile, so I'm not even sure it is still going) is RAOGK--google it for more info. You may have mixed results, depending on the volunteers. Good luck.
