    1. Re: [MD-BALTIMORECITY] Ward or district number in 1860
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: gwwilliams44 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.maryland.counties.baltimorecity/8066.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I found an 1850 Map of Baltimore County and City which shows a toll booth on the Frederick Turnpike in the First District of Baltimore County, just west of the city limits on the way to Catonsville. The districts may have changed by 1860, but I think this should help. I don't believe the city limits changed between 1850 and '60, so I recommend you look in Baltimore County. I am not surprised that you are having difficulty finding her in the 1860 census. My father's family at that time all lived in the Baltimore area, and many of them are easliy found in the 1850 and 1870 censuses, but are missing in 1860. I have speculated that the growing political turmoil in 1860 that led to the Civil War may have disrupted the census. Hope this helps, GWW Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. In the event Albert's remains are recovered and identified, the U.S. Army generally tries to have family members present at the burial. Albert is one of the MIAs from Baltimore for which no living relatives have been identified. So are you saying that John Zalner (brother of Albert) was your grandfather? Tom S. Author: jsiemon Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.maryland.counties.baltimorecity/8063.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Lois, A Google search found this web site that lists an SS Northern Light, chartered by the War Department from 1862-65. It may not be the same ship (ship names were reused often), but it could be. You might search Google and newspaper archives for other info. Also, check the "Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies" at http://digital.library.cornell.edu/m/moawar/ofre.html Lastly, the National Archives has all the Federal Records and most likely has information, though it may not be online. Look at their web site to see what they have. Good luck. John Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
