    1. TOPP Family

    3. I am searching for two members of the TOPP Family, or any that anyone is aware of. I have two Edward Topp's that came to the colonies, the first in 1666 as a headwright, entering through Maryland and then supposedly going to Virginia, but not all head wrights, went to their property I am told. The second Edward came in 1689 -91 on the Kings pay and was a Church of England Minister and a school teacher. I have reason to believe they were father and son, or grand father and grandson. At present my current traceable trail ends with Roger Topp in Potato Run VA born in 1740, father was Roger also - birth and death dates unknown. Both TOPP's came from England. If any has any information on this family please contact me. I have included the following as the documentation for their arrivals. Edward Topp is near the bottom of this documentation. THE EARLIEST EMIGRANTS NAMED HENDERSON - IN VIRGINIAThe earliest emigrants to the Colony of VIRGINIA included the following: GILBERT HENDERSON. He was one of the headrights of THOMAS JOHNSON, JR., who patented 450 acres on the "Eastern Shore" in Northampton County, Va., May 10th, 1652. (Nugent p. 277). His name, and that of ROBERT KING, JOHN WATTS and ROBERT BLAKE was attached to another patent issued to WALTER TAYLOR, Northampton County, Va., for "Gabriel Island", in 1662. (Nugent p. 419). GILHERT HENDERSON also patented himself 500 acres in ACCOMAC (Formerly called Northampton) on Oct. 10, 1664, which adjoined the lands of STEPHEN CHARLTON. (Nugent p. 517). MATTHEW HENDERSON was a headright of HENRY WESTGATE who obtained a patent to 250 acres of land in LOWER NORFOLK CO. Virginia, about 1655 (The date could not be made out), as shown by NUGENT, page 332. EDWARD HENDERSON is listed among 73 persons, supposed to have been transported into VIRGINIA by THOMAS BUTTON, when he patented 3650 acres of land on the South side of the Rappahannock river in OLD RAPPAHANNOCK County July 19, 1666. (Nugent pp. 561-562) ALEIANDER HENDERSON, with EDWARD EPPES - JOHN TURNER, JOHN HUNT and a certain HUGH WILLIAMS were among the headrights used by JOHN LANDMAN, on May 22, 1650, when he patented 650 acres, also on the South side of the RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER. (Nugent p. 197). JAMES HENDERSON, himself, patented 400 acres in ACCOMAC COUNTY, on the "Eastern Shore" of Virginia, on the SOUTH SIDE of POCOMOKE RIVER, April 5, 1666. (This land was in what became SOMERSET COUNTY, Maryland, and is also referred to on page 479 of Torrence's Old Somerset County.)The headrights named by him in securing the patent were JOHN LONG, JAMES COLLINS, EDWARD TOPP, ELIZABETH WHITE, *********************** JOHN PRICE, JOHN AUBREY, ALICE STEWKLEY and FLORENCE EVANS. (Nugent p. 552. The last emigrant - JAMES HENDERSON -- is known to have been the ancestor of a numerous family of HENDERSONS in SOMERSET COUNTY, whose descendants located in Augusta County, Virginia. It does list the reference of pate 479 of Torrence's Old Somerset County. The Edward Topp that came in 1689-91 was sent to me by my researcher in England.
