Paull with two ll's is typical of the Cornish spelling. Many of the Cornish had worked in the mines and came to the US for job opportunitites. William Pooley was manager of a copper mine in Maryland. The Pooleys apparently had no children. John and Susan's son Francis G would have been named for John's brother Francis George and their father George Francis Paull and son James E's middle name was probably Eade for mother Jane Eade. I descend from another brother Henry Eade Paull who came to the US at the end of 1859 to join his brother and sister. Brother Frank also came to the US. I had never heard of the Rouger children being adopted, but do not have a great deal of information about brother John and sister Caroline. My supposition would be that the mother of those children might have died in childbirth since the baby was only 6 months old at the time of the 1860 census. The father might well have been a miner and unable to care for three children so John and Susan took them in. There is a William Rouger, miner, and his wife Margaret shown in the 1870 census living two stops away from the Pooleys, with no children. The first wife would probably have been born in England, hence both parents having been born in England; Margaret was born in Maryland. I don't know why the family would have moved up to PA at the time of the 1870 census but John and Susan and Thomas H are buried in MD - Thomas H is listed as "son of J&S", lending some credence to his (and his brother and sister) being adopted. Caroline and William Pooley are buried nearby and the fir! st wife of my great grandfather is in the same cemetery. Henry Eade Paull and Francis George Paull are buried in Mount Holly Springs, PA, near Harrisburg (where I live). In the later censuses there is a reference to Lester Paull. I have spoken to a Lester Paull who lived in the area where the Paull folks lived - he was likely a son of the Lester shown. Unfortunately, he did not know of any link to the Paull family. He as well as his wife have died in the past several years. But the information supplied in these posts suggests that there was no actual blood ties to my Paull family.
