It is pronounced like it is spelled: Econ - lock - hatch - ee. I don't know how the American Natives ponounced it, maybe the "a" was a strong "a". My grandmother told me it meant "deep dark water". However, I found in Florida research books as meaning something about the tall banks. Around Snow Hill (Oviedo, FL), the banks get pretty steep. John Tanner bought property off of Lake Pickett Road. On several census reports, his address is reported as being on Lake Pickett Road. However, his driveway became S. Tanner Road between Lake Pickett Road and Hwy 50. It looks as tough he bought the highest property in that area (high and dry). At this time, the river is shallow, but gets deeper and wider in the Oveido area. Bea Tanner said when she was young, the river was 20 feet deep. Now overflowing is 8-10 feet and the aveage may be around 4-5 feet in this section. I visit anywhere from 8-12 times a year and my kids love to camp there and explore.
