I am looking for the illusive Doxey, Doherty and Conway families sometime around 1812 or before. I found them also in the 1870 and 1880 Census. My great grandfather Albert married Sophia Grottle in 1863 in Baltimore and then moved to Carroll Co. I found their tombstones there and the dates of birth are the same year that was on the Ship document when he came over with Elizabeth. Also on the same ship there was another family and I feel that their are family of Bernhardt' brother Nicholas's wife and children. They were all together in the 1870 census in Carroll Co. In the 1890 Baltimore Directories they list Bernhardt & Elizabeth living at Pratt St. and your Louis and Edward B. living at Pulaski St.I notice that Zentgraf is spell several ways.Do you notice that. How was your family spelt? Would like ! to know when Bernhardt came over. Donna I am getting off of Ancestry this month so if you like you can e-mail me at Mary-Tom@OLG. Thanks and if you have any info that you could help me with I would gratefully appreaciate it and thanks for your response. Bernhardt was born in Bavaria approx. 1820 and came from Germany in approx. 1854 to Baltimore. I've found them on the 1870/1880 U.S. Federal Census. So far only four children are named: Louis, Anna, Adeline, and Frank. (Louis was my gg-grandfather, and his son, Bernard William was my grandfather.) Would you happen to know Elizabeth's maiden name? Or, the name of their fifth child? My research has been mostly through Ancestry.com. If you know of any other leads to help my search, I'd be most grateful. Blessings, Donna N. My understanding is that Ellen Hurst b. 1844 in MS (my gg grandmother) was the dau of Leticia (Ward) Hurst, and Leticia was the dau of Rachel Kidd Ward. This has been one of the more frustrating lines I've worked on. I'm not certain of Ellen's father/Leticia's husband. I do know Ellen Hurst married Horace Hall in MS in 1861 moved to Houston, TX. I found both Horace and Ellen Hall in the Houston city directories until about 1895 (and 1880 US Census), but then they both disappear, as well as their kids (Horace Jr., David, Fannie). The kids resurface in 1910, but the last record of Ellen is as a widow in the 1895 Houston city directory. Unfortunately TX didn't start requiring death certificates until 1903. I wish there were more Houston death/cemetery/obit records available on-line. If any of this sounds remotely familiar, I'd love to hear more. Thanks! The Rench sisters were mentioned by noted painter, Charles Willson PEALE, when he said "Among them was a painting by one of the Rench sisters, both from the Eastern Shore and both artists". Polly, who married Judge Jacob RUSH and Sarah, who married James Claypoole Jr., are also mentioned by John Sartain in 'Reminiscences of a Very Old Man 1808-1897' (New York 1899) who said:- "Miss Polly Rench, sister to Mrs James Claypole, painted in miniature and had the merit of maintaining her mother and brother by the work of her pencil. She was a native of Maryland and probably first embraced the idea of painting from the connection of her sister, but of this I want information. She married Mr Rush, then a young practitioneer of Law since a judge." Any information at all regarding the Rench sisters, their parents and sibling(s)would be most gratefully received.
