    1. [Maryland] DRAKE Descendants
    2. Pam Drake
    3. Hi Joan! Thanks so much for taking the time to write me. My 2xgreat-grandfather,Thomas DRAKE,was born in MD.in 1810. His parents were: William DRAKE,Jr. & Mary ? I don't know where they were married yet but I suspect MD.or PA. William & Mary DRAKE moved from Bedford Co.,PA. to Harrison Co.,OH. in 1819. Thomas DRAKE married Hannah BROWNING in Harrison Co.,OH. on 25 Jan.1837. The BROWNING's came from MD.also. They seemed to travel together from one state to the next one. At this point we haven't figured out who Hannah's parents were either. There is at least two BROWNING families in Harrison Co.,OH. at the same time as the DRAKE's. There were DRAKE's & BROWNING's living at the same time around the Flintstone area of Allegany Co.,MD. also. Thanks again for writing! Pam in IN.

    3. Hi Pam. I have seen several of your messages of late and have been meaning to send you a note. I work for H&R Block during tax season so my correspondence tends to sit til after tax season - then I have to get into a catch up mode. I know it has been a time since we corresponded and I don't really have anything new on the Drakes. I am still trying to figure out where my own Samuel fits in - I also tie into the NJ Drakes, most likely through Rev John Drake who had 3 wives and about 15 kids. Your William would be the same generation as my Samuel so they were probably cousins of some sort. I just can't get the missing links for one or two generations. One of these days I'll have to get back to NJ to do a bit more research - I've been living in Harrisburg for seven years now. I knew that several Drakes headed west but did not realize that they touched down in MD. I have several MD families from the early years but haven't run across any Drake families as yet. Just wanted to drop a note to say hi and to let you know that other Drakes continue to be frustrated as well. Hope all goes well outside the Drake line. He married Elizabeth Hinkle in 1780 in Frederick Co.,MD. I don't know for sure who his parents & grandparents were yet. He had at least two brothers,Thomas & David & one sister Hannah Drake. Author: Hoffman7931065 Surnames: Speakman, Carey, Paine Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.maryland.unknown/899.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: No, unfortunately I have been stuck on this forever. I know Margaret was born in Maryland around 1811. Census records indicate her parents were born in South Carolina. She married William Paine in 1832 in Ross county. They moved to Pickaway County, and then I lose track of William. I believe he left her because I can't find any record of his death or any mention of him; there are many Paines in that area, as well as Ross Co. I also think that he left her because she kept the name Paine until her death, and on the 1850 and 1860 census records, she has had more children, yet no husband is listed. She is continually listed as the head of the household. Also, in her children's obits, children who I always thought were full brothers and sisters are both--listed as brothers and listed as HALF brothers and sisters, so she must have has a few with William and a couple with someone else. Her daughter, Elizabeth, did marry Mortimore Carey, and he was also a scoundrel, and I think she also had children illegitimately, prior to her marriage to Mortimore. I know that her son, Frank, is their son. So, it is much confusion. I think Jesse Paine is her son but not William's, Elizabeth is hers and Williams, and I think Bushrod is hers and Williams. I am not sure of the others. Anyway, I've rambled on enough, thank you so much for your interest and help. I'll keep trying to find something. William PAINE m. 26 Je. 1832, Ross Co., OH, Margaret SPEAKMAN (ca. 1811 - 1893), and had Elizabeth, Minor, Bushrod, Minerva, Augustus, Anne, & possibly John, Jessie, & Marietta. Could the first daughter be the Elizabeth PAIN_, who m. 19 Aug. 1860, Madison Co., OH, Mortimore CAREY? Possibly someone from Margaret's family accompanied her to Madison Co. because USGenWeb also has a Madison Co., OH, marriage 28 Dec. 1887, for Lucinda SPEAKMAN & Samuel FOULK. Rootsweb has a Lucinda, b. ca. 1865, dau/o Mary GATES / GOETZ & Jacob SPEAKMAN. Could the SPEAKMAN migration have included Pennsylvania? Google shows a will, pr. 8 Apr. 1809, Newlin, now Columbia Co., PA, for Ebenezer SPEAKMAN, wf. Mary, ch. Lydia LADLEY, Mary BAKER, George, Joshua, Jacob, & Margaret SPEAKMAN. {I know that's early for your Margaret, but the Margaret in the will could have been a relative.} Do you have the ancestry of Wm.
