Dear Listers I really need some advice to where to find information especially the date of birth on my maternal grandfather, William John Wilson. I never knew he even existed until I was married with children of my own. Most of my information is very conflicting. According to my Aunt's birth certificate (the first born) on 2/22/1914, states William's age as 20. On my mother's 11/5/1918 his age is 23. Pretty consistent there. He married my grandmother on 2/6/1913 at the Seventh Baptist Church in Baltimore (on record at the Church), but the "record of Marriage" filed in the Court House on 2/7/1913 shows him to be 21 and my grandmother 18. My grandmother even used her middle name as her last name. I know for certain they both lied about their ages. The biggest inconsistency is his draft registration card dated 6/5/1917 (2nd Precinct, 8th ward) showing him to be 22 born on 2/29/1895. Since 1895 was not a "Leap" year, I have no idea which is wrong the day or the year. The only other document I have is a copy of my grandparents divorce summons dated 3/6/1922. Apparently at that time, he was a resident of the Baltimore City Jail, since that is where the summons was sent. Of course I tried to follow up on this, but that was a nightmare. Where would I obtain the marriage and/or a voter's card application for my grandfather? Maybe on these forms he gave his actual day and month of birth. At least that would be a start. D. 29 Jul 1864 at Ft. Schuyler, NY. He had probably three children before he joined the US Army- not sure if volunteered or drafted. He married Jane Hamburg B.26 May 1830. D. 2 Aug 1906. She later had a son John Hamburg Byers B. 13 Mar 1873 D. 8 Nov 1951. John H. Byers was my great grandfather, don't remember him but certainly saw him - I was born 1950. I have no other info on Charles Byers; he may have come from the Taneytown, Md. area. The reason for thinking this is statements my father made. The family of John Hamburg Byers started a tradition of Byers reunions in 1949, the have been held every year since. The first reunion was held with John Hamburg Byers missing, even though it was his family being honored. He missed because there was a Byers reunion near Taneytown, Md.he usually went to, and decided to got there instead - they were by chance the same day. He went the next two years to the local reunion I believe. I am guessing that he knew of Byers relatives in that area with which he felt a close relationship. There were Byers in Washington County Maryland, and several in the area of State Line, Pa. and Middleburg, Md.(Near the now Hagerstown Airport. No one has found any connection to there families; maybe we need to look at Frederick, County. I do know the Hamburgs, (Charles wife's family) came from the Wolfsville and Foxville area. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: JBretz1 Surnames: Paull, Pooley, Rouger Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.maryland.unknown/7656.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: John Paull and his wife Susan as well as his sister Caroline Paull Pooley and her husband William Pooley came to the US from Cornwall. Paull with two ll's is typical of the Cornish spelling. Many of the Cornish had worked in the mines and came to the US for job opportunitites. William Pooley was manager of a copper mine in Maryland. The Pooleys apparently had no children. John and Susan's son Francis G would have been named for John's brother Francis George and their father George Francis Paull and son James E's middle name was probably Eade for mother Jane Eade. I descend from another brother Henry Eade Paull who came to the US at the end of 1859 to join his brother and sister. Brother Frank also came to the US. I had never heard of the Rouger children being adopted, but do not have a great deal of information about brother John and sister Caroline. My supposition would be that the mother of those children might have died in childbirth since the baby was only 6 months old at the time of the 1860 census. The father might well have been a miner and unable to care for three children so John and Susan took them in. There is a William Rouger, miner, and his wife Margaret shown in the 1870 census living two stops away from the Pooleys, with no children. The first wife would probably have been born in England, hence both parents having been born in England; Margaret was born in Maryland. I don't know why the family would have moved up to PA at the time of the 1870 census but John and Susan and Thomas H are buried in MD - Thomas H is listed as "son of J&S", lending some credence to his (and his brother and sister) being adopted. Caroline and William Pooley are buried nearby and the fir! st wife of my great grandfather is in the same cemetery. Henry Eade Paull and Francis George Paull are buried in Mount Holly Springs, PA, near Harrisburg (where I live). In the later censuses there is a reference to Lester Paull. I have spoken to a Lester Paull who lived in the area where the Paull folks lived - he was likely a son of the Lester shown. Unfortunately, he did not know of any link to the Paull family. He as well as his wife have died in the past several years. But the information supplied in these posts suggests that there was no actual blood ties to my Paull family.
