    1. TOPP Family
    2. jtopp
    3. I am searching for two members of the TOPP Family, or any that anyone is aware of. I have two Edward Topp's that came to the colonies, the first in 1666 as a headwright, entering through Maryland and then supposedly going to Virginia, but not all head wrights, went to their property I am told. The second Edward came in 1689 -91 on the Kings pay and was a Church of England Minister and a school teacher. I have reason to believe they were father and son, or grand father and grandson. At present my current traceable trail ends with Roger Topp in Potato Run VA born in 1740, father was Roger also - birth and death dates unknown. Both TOPP's came from England. If any has any information on this family please contact me. I have included the following as the documentation for their arrivals. Edward Topp is near the bottom of this documentation. THE EARLIEST EMIGRANTS NAMED HENDERSON - IN VIRGINIAThe earliest emigrants to the Colony of VIRGINIA included the following: GILBERT HENDERSON. He was one of the headrights of THOMAS JOHNSON, JR., who patented 450 acres on the "Eastern Shore" in Northampton County, Va., May 10th, 1652. (Nugent p. 277). His name, and that of ROBERT KING, JOHN WATTS and ROBERT BLAKE was attached to another patent issued to WALTER TAYLOR, Northampton County, Va., for "Gabriel Island", in 1662. (Nugent p. 419). GILHERT HENDERSON also patented himself 500 acres in ACCOMAC (Formerly called Northampton) on Oct. 10, 1664, which adjoined the lands of STEPHEN CHARLTON. (Nugent p. 517). MATTHEW HENDERSON was a headright of HENRY WESTGATE who obtained a patent to 250 acres of land in LOWER NORFOLK CO. Virginia, about 1655 (The date could not be made out), as shown by NUGENT, page 332. EDWARD HENDERSON is listed among 73 persons, supposed to have been transported into VIRGINIA by THOMAS BUTTON, when he patented 3650 acres of land on the South side of the Rappahannock river in OLD RAPPAHANNOCK County July 19, 1666. (Nugent pp. 561-562) ALEIANDER HENDERSON, with EDWARD EPPES - JOHN TURNER, JOHN HUNT and a certain HUGH WILLIAMS were among the headrights used by JOHN LANDMAN, on May 22, 1650, when he patented 650 acres, also on the South side of the RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER. (Nugent p. 197). JAMES HENDERSON, himself, patented 400 acres in ACCOMAC COUNTY, on the "Eastern Shore" of Virginia, on the SOUTH SIDE of POCOMOKE RIVER, April 5, 1666. (This land was in what became SOMERSET COUNTY, Maryland, and is also referred to on page 479 of Torrence's Old Somerset County.)The headrights named by him in securing the patent were JOHN LONG, JAMES COLLINS, EDWARD TOPP, ELIZABETH WHITE, *********************** JOHN PRICE, JOHN AUBREY, ALICE STEWKLEY and FLORENCE EVANS. (Nugent p. 552. The last emigrant - JAMES HENDERSON -- is known to have been the ancestor of a numerous family of HENDERSONS in SOMERSET COUNTY, whose descendants located in Augusta County, Virginia. It does list the reference of pate 479 of Torrence's Old Somerset County. The Edward Topp that came in 1689-91 was sent to me by my researcher in England. Name: Edward Topp Year: 1697-1698 Place: Maryland Source Publication Code: 2144 Primary Immigrant: Topp, Edward Annotation: Ministers and schoolmasters of the Church of England who went to western colonies in return for a bounty from the King. From the Rawlinson MSS. Receipt Book of Secret Service Money, April 20, 1689, to June 1691, in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, England, and from other papers in the Public Record Office, London. 1. Wenona, Maryland - DANIEL, ROWE, and WINDSOR Graves
    2. Betty Hart
    3. Does anyone have any information about the families/graves that are off the right-hand side of the main road through Wenona, Maryland (Somerset County near Deal Island), in a thicket down near the marina. There is a lane leading through the Daniels' property and to the left of that lane are the subject graves. The first time my sister and I visited these graves, Mr. Daniels was in his yard and he came over and talked with us. He related that the Daniel folks were his ancestors (current day spelling Daniels). He said that his Grandmother was either related to the Windsor lady (Rebecca Windsor) buried there or that she would know the family connections. Unfortunately, we have never been given the opportunity to talk with this lady. It is likewise unfortunate that folks are quite often reluctant to share information. They do not understand that they may be the last living link to certain people and there are ancestors (folks like my sister and me) everywhere trying to trace their roots for no other reason than to find out all we can about our ancestors. A local genealogist told my sister and me about these DANIEL, ROWE, and WINDSOR graves in Wenona. We were looking for the grave of Rebecca WINDSOR, first wife of John H. WINDSOR, of Deal Island. She died in 1849 and John remarried (2nd wife Levinia in 1850) just 8 months after Rebecca's death. Rebecca's maiden name was JONES. If anyone can share any information about either of these families buried in this Wenona family plot, we would greatly appreciate it. We do not know who our Great-Great-Grandfather's parents are and we are trying to determine if John and Rebecca may have been such. Our G-G-Grandfather and two siblings (a brother, William, and a sister, Jane Catharine) appeared in the 1850 DC Census living with a Mrs. Martha LOMAX (widow of Samuel) and two teens with her same surname. Martha LOMAX appeared in the 1840 Census in Charles County, Maryland. We didn't know if our relatives had left home after their father was remarried to a young woman just a few years older than my G-G-Grandfather or ??? Just speculation! Our Grandfather, it is said, told some family members that he visited relatives in the Princess Anne area when he was a young man. He shared many details about his family with us but, as I said above, he was the last link to those people and we didn't get enough details from him... (I really believe he told us all he knew about his grandparents but, for some unknown reason, no one in the family was told who our G-G-G-Grandparents were or where they came from. The census records and death certificates for their children state that they were born in Maryland.) We would be most grateful if you have any information on these families that you would share with us. Thank you, <mailto:[email protected]>Betty

    1. Charles H. EVANS & Sallie (WINDSOR) EVANS
    2. Betty Hart
    3. I am looking for descendents of Charles H. EVANS and Sarah (Sallie) WINDSOR EVANS. We believe that Charles and Sallie were divorced. Charles and Sallie had two sons: (1) Clarence Steed EVANS who was born in January 1898 in Washington, DC, and died in 1929. Clarence had a son named Steve (wife Vivian). I do not know if he had other children. (2) Bob EVANS - I do not have any information on him. http://www.espl.org/mearscol/pagendxc/crockett/d15990.htm SIXTH GENERATION -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Charles H. Evans was born in 1864 in Accomack County, Va. He died in 1938 in Accomack County, Va.. Charles was married to Sarah (Sallie) M. Windsor (daughter of Lemuel H. WINDSOR and Catherine [Kate] BELL) on April 28, 1882, in Accomack County, Va. Sallie was born on June 9, 1866, in Washington, DC; and, died May 16, 1920 in Washington, DC. She is buried in Congressional Cemetery with her brother, John Henry WINDSOR, and sister-in-law, Kate D. [MITCHELL] WINDSOR. Charles H. EVANS was the son of George W. EVANS, Grandson of Peter and Triffey (CROCKETT) EVANS of Smith Island, Maryland; and, Great Grandson of Richard and Rachael EVANS of MD*. It is believed that some of our EVANS ancestor lived in Florida. Someone used to visit my Grandfather, Charles H. WINDSOR, Jr., in Onancock, VA. We do not know who this was as my Grandfather, being from the "old school", was very quite and "closed mouth" when it came to sharing details about some of our "kin". We have been told by family members that this person came seeking family information and that our Grandfather never did satisfy this person's curiosity. We have no idea why (and sometimes there didn't seem to us to be any good reason) to withheld details about our relatives. However, as a result, we are having much difficulty finding some branches of our family's tree. If anyone has any information on these EVANS or their descendents, please contact me. I would greatly appreciate any inputs. Thank you, Betty *This information was posted on the Eastern Shore Public Library web site.
