    1. British report of Bryan's Station seige, and Blue Licks battle, 1782
    2. Hermon B Fagley
    3. Following was preceded my massacre of 91 Christian Indians in e Ohio in spring,1782, and then the defeat of Col Wm Crawford's army at Upper Sandusky in mid 1782. Butler's Rangers & Indian Department Capt. Caldwell's Report Extract of a Letter from Capt. CALDWELL, dated at Wakitamiki August 26th, 1782— When I last had the pleasure of writing you I expected to have struck at Wheeling as I was on my march for that place, but was overtaken by a messenger from the Shawnese, who informed me the Enemy was on their march for their Country, which obliged me to turn their way, and to my great mortification found the Alarm false and that it was owing to a Gondalo coming up to the mouth of Licking Creek, and landing some men upon the South side of the Ohio, which when the Indians saw, supposed it must be Clark. It would have been a lucky circumstance if they had come on, as I had Eleven hundred Indians on the ground, and three hundred within a days march of me. When the Report was contradicted They mostly left us, many of them had left their Towns no ways equiped for War, as they expected as well as myself to fight in a few days, notwithstanding I was determined to pay the Enemy a visit with as many Indians as would follow me: accordingly I crossed the Ohio with three Hundred Indians and Rangers, and marched for Bryant’s Station on Kentuck, and surrounded the Fort the 15th in the morning, and tried to draw ‘em out by sending up a small Party to try to take a Prisoner and Shew themselves, but the Indians were in too great a hurry and the whole shewed to[o] soon. I then saw it was in vain to wait any longer and so drew nigh the Fort, burn’t 3 Houses which was part of the Fort but the Wind being contrary prevented it having the desired effect, kill’d upwards of 300 Hogs, 150 head of Cattle, and a number of Sheep, took a number of Horses, pull’d up and destroyed their Potatoes, cut down a great deal of their Corn, burn’t their Hemp and did other considerable damage— by the Indians exposing themselves too much we had 5 Killed and 2 wounded. We retreated the 16th and came as far as Riddle’s former Station, when nigh 100 Indians left me, as they went after their things they left at the Forks of Licking, and I took the Road by the blue Licks as it was nigher and the ground more advantageous in case the Enemy should pursue us — got to the Licks on the 17th and encamped. On the 18th in the morning, one of my Party that was watching the Road came in and told me the Enemy was within a mile of us, upon which I drew up to fight them — at œ past seven they advanced in three Divisions in good order, they had spied some of us and it was the very place they expected to overtake us. We had but fired one Gun ‘till they gave us a Volley and stood to it very well for some time, ‘till we rushed in upon them, when they broke immediately. We pursued for about two miles, and as the Enemy was mostly on horseback, it was in vain to follow further. We killed and took One hundred and Forty six, amongst the killed is Col. Todd the Commandr., Col. Boon, Lt. Col. Trigg, Major Harlin who commanded their Infantry, Major Megara, and a number more of their Officers. Our loss is Monsr. LA BUTE killed; he died like a Warrior fighting Arm to Arm, six Indians killed and ten wounded. The Indians behaved extremely well, and no People could behave better than both Officers and Men in general. The Indians I had with me were the Wyandots and Lake Indians. The Wyandots furnished me with what Provision I wanted, and behaved extremely well. 3. Butler's Rangers/Indian Dept. Skirmish at Sandusky, Ohio Copy Camp, Upper Sandoski, June the 7th [1782] Sir, I am happy in having the pleasure of acquainting you with our success on the 4th & 5th inst. On the 4th about 12 Oclock the Enemy appeared about two Miles from this, Capt. CALDWELL with the Rangers and about 200 Indians, marched out to fight them and attacked them about 2 Oclock, the Enemy immediately retreated to a Copse of woods at a little distance where they made a stand and had every advantage of us, as to Situation of ground people possibly could wish for as there was but a small neck of woods that we could get possession which when we once gained the action became general and was dubious for some time till we obliged them to retreat about 50 Yds after which were able to cover most off [sic-of] our men, the battle was very hot, till night, which put a stop to fireing, both partys kept their ground all Night. On the 5th at day break, we again commenced firing which we kept up pretty briskly till we found the Enemy did not wish to engage us again. We kept fireing at them when ever they durst show themselves, they made two attempts to sally but were repulsed with loss, about 12 Oclock we were joined by 140 Shawanese and had got the Enemy Surrounded, but through some mistake of the Indians there was one pass left unguarded, through which they made their escape about 12 at Night though some of the Indians perceived them they never alarmed our Camp till day break as soon as ever I heard it I pursued them with the Rangers about 20 Miles, as the Enemy was mostly on horseback some of the Indians who had horses and over[took] them, killed a Number and it was owing to nothing but the Country's being very clear that any of them escaped. Capt. CALDWELL was wounded in both legs the ball lodged in the one, he left the field in the beginning of the action our loss is very inconsiderable we had but 1 Ranger killed, 4 Indians kill'd and 8 Wounded, the loss of the Enemy is 100 killed and 50 Wounded as we are informed by prisoners the number of the killed we are certain off. Capt. CALDWELL went to Lower Sandosky on the Evening of the 4th Inst. I intend to march to lower Sandosky likewise in a day or two where I shall wait your orders unless something should turn up before I hear from you, they say Clark will be in the Shawanese Country and that Sandoskie is the properest place for us to be till such time as we are certain the report is true. Too much cannot be said, in praise of the Officers, the Men & the Indians no people could behave better. Capt. ELLIOT and Lt. CLINCH in particular Signalized themselves. I am Sir with Mr. CLINCHes Compliments Your most Obedt. Humble Servant John TURNEY Lieut. of Rangers Commanding upper Sandoskie To Major DePEYSTER Commdt. Detroit &ca. 2. I've just gotten the official word: "Due to internal system problems at RootsWeb ... all servers (including the mail and list servers) had conniptions for a few hours.... Mail was bouncing from the mailhub, and an amount through that time was bounced as User Unknown." So, if you attempted to post to the list, and got your mail back User Unknown, you will need to resend. If you sent a post, but got nothing back, please wait a couple of days and see if you need to resend. Old mail gets 'queued' until the backlog is cleared, so mail may be sent out of order. You can always check the archives to see if your post made it to the list: http://archiver.rootsweb.com And as always, you can check on the status of your list subscriptions at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com and check for notices at http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com All the best, Valorie http://valoriez.blogspot.com <--- genealogy link blog

    1. Quick surname + Stephen Goble 1840 Bartholomew census
    2. Hermon B Fagley
    3. I studied a minute the McQueen 1840 Flat Run,Bartholomew Co,Ind.Census. Dugal>Thomas> James McQueen, and Richard Elston once lived near the Ohio River,at the mouth of Quick's Run,near Vanceburg,Lewis Co,n e Ky. 1790 era. Just as Dugal >Thomas> Thomas was an Indian captive, and Dugal>Thomas> son was 1782 killed by Indians,so the Quick's had troubles. Quick's had an early block-house on Quick's run that was defeated by Indians, and one,or more Quick's taken captive and kept near Detroit. [Perhaps Stout family also involved. ] Stephen Goble's name caught my eye on the 1st page of 1840 Bartholomew census, but I did not note whether Flat Run or not. Dugal>Thomas>Elizabeth McQueen m Capt-Lt-Rev-JP George Brown. Eldest son,Jousha Brown, named for Dugal>Thomas>Jousha McQueen, was married in 1801 to Alice Lindsey. Of their several New Richmond,Ohio township children,I know only Alice and Elizabeth Brown, who married a Stephen Goble. I have a guess a Robert Brown, married in 1838 to a Molden,, by Timothy Rairden,JP was of Jousha Brown,or his elder sister, Ruth Brown m 1794 Madison Co,Ky,a Robert Brown ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the Internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! 1. Nationwide Gravesite Locator for National Cemeteries
    2. Valorie Zimmerman
    3. Great news! The VA has put a Nationwide Gravesite Locator online, with all the burials in all National Cemeteries nationwide, with the exception of four cemeteries that have not completed their records: Long Island; Los Angeles; Ft. Rosecrans; and the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. Interment.net has Los Angeles National Cemetery online (85,825 records): http://interment.net/data/us/ca/losangeles/lanat/index.htm Fort Rosecrans (71,608 records): http://interment.net/data/us/ca/sandiego/rosecrans/index.htm National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (35,224 records): http://interment.net/data/us/hi/oahu/natmem/index.htm The website says: "Arlington National Cemetery records are also available for interments that occurred after 1999. As more records are added to the database, more burial information will become available. Some state veterans cemeteries can also be searched." Nationwide Gravesite Locator: http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov A simple search for 'mcqueen' got me 159 matches, 'macqueen' - 11. :-) Valorie http://valoriez.blogspot.com

    1. [McQUEEN] Scotland Free Census Project
    2. Valorie Zimmerman
    3. I can't seem to get this through to the lists without Rootsweb stopping it as SPAM. There is some dang HTML in it, which might be the problem. <sigh> Email should be Plain Text! Also, I just wanted to mention that while I am listed as the Selkirkshire coordinator, I have (sadly) had to resign that position. So please write to Jennifer if you are interested in taking over the Selkirkshire coordinator's position. Valorie Zimmerman From: "Scotland FreeCensus" <ScotlandFreeCensus@mail2world.com> Subject: Scotland Free Census Project Date: Tue, 10 Feb 2004 19:43:22 -0800 The free census project aims to transcribe all the UK 19th Century returns to create an online 'free-to-view' database. It is part of an overall project that also covers the registers of Births, Deaths & Marriages (FreeBDM) and Parish Registers (FreeREG). If you, like many of us, have brick walls in the early nineteenth century due to nomadic ancestors; then the database will help to quickly locate those pesky ancestors. The database has been operational for around six months and can be found at the following URL: http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl it contains approximately 2 million records in total. Some Scottish returns are already available in the database, with more being added all the time. We are looking for volunteers to help with the transcription of the census. You will need access to a computer and a microfilm or microfiche reader. We will supply the rest. Most Scottish projects are currently working on the 1841 census, with some having already progressed to the 1851. The counties of : Aberdeen Argyll Roxburgh Renfrew are currently looking for new volunteers. Other counties will post request for new volunteers on either their website or the relevant Rootsweb county list when needed. If you are interested please visit the webpage of the county in question or contact the county coordinator direct, we and other family historians worldwide will appreciate any contribution you can make.
