    1. US Surgeon General's National Family History Day

    3. http://hhs.gov/familyhistory/ U.S. Surgeon General's Family History Initiative Health care professionals have known for a long time that common diseases - heart disease, cancer, and diabetes - and even rare diseases - like hemophilia, cystic fibrosis, and sickle cell anemia - can run in families. If one generation of a family has high blood pressure, it is not unusual for the next generation to have similarly high blood pressure. Tracing the illnesses suffered by your parents, grandparents, and other blood relatives can help your doctor predict the disorders to which you may be at risk and take action to keep you and your family healthy. To help focus attention on the importance of family health history, U.S. Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., in cooperation with other agencies within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has launched a national public health campaign, called the U.S. Surgeon General's Family History Initiative, to encourage all American families to learn more about their family health history. In addition to the Office of the Surgeon General, other HHS agencies involved in this project include the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). National Family History Day Surgeon General Carmona has declared Thanksgiving 2004 to be the first annual National Family History Day. Thanksgiving is the traditional start of the holiday season for most Americans. Whenever families gather, the Surgeon General encourages them to talk about, and to write down, the health problems that seem to run in their family. Learning about their family's health history may help ensure a longer future together. My Family Health Portrait Americans know that family history is important to health. A recent survey found that 96 percent of Americans believe that knowing their family history is important. Yet, the same survey found that only one-third of Americans have ever tried to gather and write down their family's health history. Because family health history is such a powerful screening tool, the Surgeon General has created a new computerized tool to help make it fun and easy for anyone to create a sophisticated portrait of their family's health. This new tool, called "My Family Health Portrait" can be downloaded for free and installed on your own computer. See http://hhs.gov/familyhistory/download.html The tool will help you organize your family tree and help you identify common diseases that may run in your family. When you are finished, the tool will create and print out a graphical representation of your family's generations and the health disorders that may have moved from one generation to the next. That is a powerful tool for predicting any illnesses for which you should be checked. For information on other activities of the Office of the Surgeon General, please visit www.surgeongeneral.gov. For more on this subject, see: http://valoriez.blogspot.com/2004/11/knowing-family-history-can-save-your.html Have a great Thanksgiving, Americans! Valorie

    3. Welcome back, Mikel! I still find lots of links to your old pages, so I hope that you will get lots of hits. Be sure to register your link on the McQueen Resources page, http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/m/c/MCQUEEN/ -- that goes for any list members who have webpages covering their McQueen lines. If I'm not mistaken, Mikel is the founding listowner of this list, for which we are grateful! As far as ordering the CDs from the LDS library I would guess you could do that by going to the nearest LDs family hist center, if applicable, and order. Or call them and ask. I have never used them. As for any other McQueen lineage this was all I've got that pertains to Ireland/Scotland/or England. The down lines are all in Ontario, Canada (Renfrew and Goderich) or in Toole, Utah. However, the McQueen/Orr family did sail from Liverpool, England when they came to America aboard the ship "Falcon" Doug S.

    3. McQueen list members, You probably have noticed that Rootsweb lists have been slow or non-existant. For more information, see the yellow box on http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com I've been meaning to write to y'all, because my life has taken a different turn in the last year. The spring of 2002, my cousin Carol and her son Colin came to live with us. She was ill, and died that next October, leaving us to raise her son Colin. So this mama-with-an-empty-nest became the mama-of-a-teenager. Colin is 16 now, and doing well, but it's been pretty difficult. I'm sure you have noticed that I haven't been posting to the list as much. Also, I'm really far behind on fixing up the Message Board posts before sending them along to the list. I have always done this in the past, because people tend to click reply in their email programs sort of automatically, and that tactic doesn't work very well for replying to list posts! I'm so behind, however, that I'm going to enable automatic gatewaying. You will see the MB posts at the same time I do, and I won't be able to add any notice that you should Click the Link and reply on the board -- but please remember to do so. And I won't have a chance to edit the Subject line and make sure it pertains to the post, instead of a post long ago in the thread, and the Surname line to make sure that it indexes surnames mentioned in the post, instead of a long list of all the surnames the poster is researching! In short, I don't have as much time at my disposal any more for editing the MB posts before you get them, so you will have to keep your wits about you, and remember to reply to MB posts ON THE BOARD -- or at least CC the poster when you reply to the list. I'll try to keep up with editing the Subject and Surname indexing as I see the posts. I hope that allowing automatic gatewaying will give the list more traffic. McQueen Message Board: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/board/rw/surnames.mcqueen I created a webpage of research helps awhile back, at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~valorie/McQueen-L.htm . Please bookmark that page, and notify me of any bad links, or anything I need to add. A great way to get data up is to transcribe Bible records, Wills, Pensions, Deeds, Census data and so forth, put the text in a Message Board post, and attach the image. Be sure to put all the surnames mentioned in the document in the Surname indexing line -- not a list of the surnames you are researching! All the best, Valorie

    3. Hi, everybody. I've been going through my bounces folder, and am finding some folks who are subbed to the list, sending subscribe requests. If you think you have bounced off, there are a couple of things you can do. First is to check the list archives, and see what, if anything, you have missed. http://archiver.rootsweb.com Next, drop by Password Central, and request a list of all list subscriptions. Remember to list all email accounts you use. http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com Finally, you might check the Help Desk to see if there are any server problems. Lists5, one of the two listservers that Rootsweb runs, is down at the moment. Fortunately, our list is not affected. http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com If you would like to see some list traffic, please post a query or research question. Or perhaps mention to the list a wonderful new book about the McQueens or related subjects you have just finished reading, or a great new website which has helped in your McQueen research. Subscribe requests by folks already subbed will be deleted without notice. I just don't have time to write individually. Valorie http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~valorie/McQueen-L.htm

Thanks I will check it out later, seems very complicated.... I really know where my McQueen ancestors came from Scotland and Ireland. The Gaelig name is MacShuibne or McSweeney derived from Sveyn Svein (Norse) related to the McDonalds of the Isles. They later were Gallowglasses for the O'Donnells chiefs of Donegal and settled into NI and some are still there. The Norse ruled the western part of Scotland for many centuries until defeated by Scots. The Norse also were invaders in Ireland and stayed for a few hundred years, defeated by Brian Boru 1014, many stayed and intermarried with Irish. Don't forget names in Ireland were in Gaelic translated into English so it's hard to trace some now. Enough history for now. A couple of brief notes, now that the Rootsweb listservers seem to have settled down. As a gift, I got my dad a Y-DNA kit a couple of years ago. It's quite exciting to see some close matches come up. I noticed in the match-notification email of the lab who did the work for him and interesting passage: "Please remember to add your results to www.Ysearch.org, the FTDNA sponsored public database. On the right side of your personal page you will see an explanation and a link for the upload." So I visited http://www.Ysearch.org and was impressed. You can search for genetic matches, and search by last name. They say: In order to allow people that have tested with the different companies to make their results available for comparison, Family Tree DNA is offering Ysearch as a free public service. We have added several tools that allow you to compare side-by-side different users - the YsearchCompare - as well as generate a Genetic Distance\x{2122} Report, and many other features, including the upload of GEDCOM files. I've added this site to my link blog post about DNA & Genealogy research: http://valoriez.blogspot.com/2003/12/genealogy-and-genetics.html <snip>

By Monday you should be able to listen on the web or download the story from Audible.com. Or perhaps your local public radio station (or one streaming on the web) will allow you to hear it real time. http://thisamericanlife.org/ My station, for instance, transmits over the radio and the web at 11 am my time Saturday: http://kuow.org . The Tacoma station http://www.kplu.org/ at 1 pm on Sunday. I hope the end of summer is delightful for those of you in the northern hemisphere, and the hints of spring the same for those of you 'down under'. Valorie
