We all look for one in the paper in the city/county of death, but there may be more than one paper covering that area. So be sure to check that, for starters. Then, if the person has moved about a bit, check the main places s/he lived, *especially* the home town. Finally, the obit should give you the funeral home, so be sure to contact them. Some are uncooperative, but some are goldmines of information. If you can't find the person you want in the census, start looking in city or county directories and/or telephone directories for those areas. Also, have you searched for a will or letters of administration? There are many, many possibilities for information, and you have to just keep turning over every stone until you find everything you need. Be sure to contact the Butler Co. Genealogical Society, since they are the experts in that research. Best of luck to you, Valorie

They were my great-grandparents and I was trying to locate my late grandfather's (their son) sister's. He only had five sisters, so with it being so long, they have all gotten married and have different names. I don't even know their first names, that is why it is so hard for me to get any of the information that I am looking for. I have not found them in the Census records. I have looked through all of them. I did locate my grandfathers grave and his obituary because he passed where I live (Sumter, SC), but if I could only find someone who knows any or Tom or Alice's children or live where they passed them I could locate their obituary and it would list the children. My grandfather's obituary only contained his children's names and his mother and f! ather. It just said that he had five sisters and didn't give their names. Thanks for replying and trying to help. I am sorry I can't provide anything more substantial than this. It may not be your line at all, but may give some clues as to where to look. All I know is that he was born in the Isle of Skye Scotland. McQueen, an illiterate labourer from the Isle of Skye. In 1778 Alexander enlisted in the 82nd Regiment of Foot raised in Scotland to fight for the British in the American Revolutionary War. When the war ended in 1783, his regiment was disbanded at Halifax and the soldiers were offered land in what would become Pictou County, where Scots had already begun to sink down roots. The early settlers in Pictou would be joined by more Scottish immigrants, most of them, like Alexander, Presbyterian by faith. Alexander's son Angus had 12 children, one of whom was Daniel. On 31 March 1849, Daniel McQueen married Catherine (Kate) Olding (1823-1916), the daughter of one of Pictou County's leading families. Catherine's Oxford-educated grandfather, Nicolas Purdue Olding, was from Kent, England. He emigrated to America and was practising law in New York when the American Revolutionary War was declared in 1775. He supported the British cause and moved to Nova Scotia as one of over 35,000 Loyalists who settled in the colony when the war ended. He became the first practising lawyer in the Pictou area and shrewdly changed his faith from Anglican to Presbyterian to conform to the beliefs of the majority of his potential clients. In taking Daniel as her life partner, Catherine was "marrying beneath her," but as his surviving letters attest, he was a persistent and persuasive suitor. Daniel was a carpenter by trade and was determined to have Catherine live in the style to which she was accustomed. In 1852 he bought a farm for £260 near the mouth of the Sutherland River and built a fine new house for his already expanding family. Daniel's business ventures ended in bankruptcy in 1878 and thereafter the family increasingly depended on the produce of their farm and the wages of their children for survival. Between 1850 and 1865, Catherine gave birth to eight children, all but one of whom survived to adulthood. Their first daughter Jane Olding (1850-1934) fell from a wagon in the early 1860s and thereafter suffered bouts of mental illness. A son, Daniel Forrester, died within a few months of his birth in 1864. 3. Savage's Genealogical Dictionary Online The following article is from Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2005 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. Information about the newsletter is available at http://www.eogn.com. James Savage's Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England, Showing Three Generations of Those Who Came Before May, 1692 is one of the greatest resources for anyone doing genealogy research in colonial New England. These books were originally published during the U.S. Civil War and still remain today as one of the greatest resources we have. If you do not have easy access to a library copy, however, modern-day reprints cost more than $100. A few years ago the same volumes were digitized and released on CD-ROM disk and are available for under $50. Thanks to the efforts of David Blackwell, the same volumes are available online at no cost. You can even download the volumes and store them on your own hard drive. You can also copy-and-paste information from the Web site directly into your genealogy program, word processor or other program. For instance, here is a copy-and-paste of the first immigrant to North America who bore my surname: [EASTMAN] ROGER , Salisbury, an orig. propr. ancest. it is believ. of all of the name in our land, d. 16 Dec. 1694, aet. 83; and his wid. You a do the same: find information on your early New England ancestry and then easily insert that data into your database. The online version of James Savage's Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England, Showing Three Generations of Those Who Came Before May, 1692 is available at: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/topic/newengland/savage Like most genealogy books, Savage's Dictionary did contain errors. Professor Robert Kraft's 1994 transcription with many corrections of James Savage's 4 volume work may be found at: http://www.usigs.org/library/books/ma/savage/savage.htm Do you have comments, questions or corrections to this article?
