Although it is posted in many places that the John McM of Guilford Co., NC, wife Margaret Ewing, is the father of Samuel of Blount Co., TN, do you have any proof? I have seen no proof, no documentation. If you look at the families which the known chn. of John of Guilford Co. married, and compare them to the families that the chn. of Samuel and Eleanor married, you find no overlap. They appear to be of different clans. The children of Samuel of Blount Co. m. families known to be from PA. The children of John of Guilford Co. m. into families from Augusta Co. etc., VA., those who had gone into NC from VA. John of Guilford Co. had an older son James, probably from an earlier marriage. It is possible that Samuel of Blount Co. was from this earlier marriage. But why no overlap? The chn. of James also m. families from Augusta Co. etc. VA. Although many of the early writings (written at least 100 years AFTER John was in Guilford Co.) say he came from PA (MD) w/the others of this colony, is there any documentation of that? There is some suggestion that John Guilford Co. arrived there ca. 1771. That is some time after the arrival of those from Rising Sun, PA/MD. And it would be more in line w/movement from the McM's who came to NC ca. 1758-70 and spread out over several counties, and who have yet to be totally untangled. John Guilford Co. did not mention a son Samuel in his will. All his chn. mentioned in his will were there in Guilford Co. It is possible he had older, unmentioned children, especially if you look at his son James' will: James left property only to those still underage and/or unmarried. It is possible John did the same, as they were not well off. But still, someone needs to document some reason why this John is supposed to be the father of Samuel, instead of being affiliated w/the descendants of Thomas and John who went to NC ca. 1758 and proliferated. The family affiliations are much more strongly like the latter. I am not, as best we can determine, descended from these branches, although if anyone has info on what happened to Nathaniel, son of James, son of John, we'd really appreciate knowing that.
