Since you asked. I just keep my eye out for anyone researching McMurrays in Scott Co VA. I am trying to identify the wife of John McMurray, Edna Grizzle, to the proper parents. Any help would be appreciated. I think she was the daughter of Jesse. Lisa Albuquerque NM
William McMurray's will was probated in Morgan Co., GA, on 11 OCT 1815. William McMurray appears on a Tax List in Clarke Co., GA in William's District in 1805. He appears on a Tax List in Lane's District in Morgan Co., GA, in 1810. There was a William McMURRAY listed as a Grand Juror in Washington Superior Court, Washington Co., GA, for the September 1796 term. This list of jurors appeared in the 29 DEC 1796 issue of The Southern Centinel & Universal Gazette, as well as the 24 DEC 1796 issue of The Augusta Chronicle & Gazette of the State. A William McMurray was listed as Clerk of Inferior court on two Georgia Indian Depredation Claims in 1802. William drew land in the 1807 Land Lottery of Georgia in Wilkinson County. He was listed as living in Howard's Military District in Washington Co., GA. The name also appears in Headright Grants in Washington Co., GA, in 1786, 1790, and 1792. William McMurray's will lists wife, Eleanor and children, Elizabeth Evans, John McMurray, Mary Anderson Burney and William McMurray. It also lists grandchildren, Franklin Augustus McMurray, John McDonald McMurray, Augusta Ann McMurray and Clarisa Evans. Presumably, Clarisa is the daughter of Elizabeth Evans. I would like to know who the parents of John McDonald McMurray, Franklin Augustus McMurray and Augusta Ann McMurray were, and whether they were siblings or cousins. Elisabeth Green-Streeter
HI Michelle, I don't know if we have communicated in the past. One group of my McMurray relatives moved to N.C. in 1758 from the Shenandoah Valley, Augusta Co., Va. Thomas McMurray, brother, I believe, of my McMurray ancestor was one of those who moved to N.C. He landed in Anson Co., N.C. in an area that eventually became a part of York Co., S.C. Thomas finally settled in Mecklenburg Co., N.C. but I haven't done much research on him. There is also John McMurray in York Co., S.C. He arrived there after the state line was settled between N.C. and S.C., probably in the late 1700's I'm told he came from Ulster through Charleston and settled in York Co., S.C. If you run into a Walter J. MacMurray in your travels please let me know. I can't find him.
Since you're asking . . . how about some questions. Some of us think we've tied the John and Mary McM in Barren Co., KY ca. 1800 back to Guilford Co. NC by the death of a John m. to Mary ca. 1798-99 in the courts in both places. We'd like to talk to any of you who have info on the Guilford Co. lines, or are researching the Barren co. lines. This John in Guilford Co., who d. ca. 1798, is apparently the son of John who d. there in 1789. John Sr.'s other sons are recorded there. We'd like to know info such as, did they come from Lancaster, PA w/other settlers of the area? Is the older John the brother of Samuel of Orange Co.? Are they both the son of James? Does anyone have info on descendants of John (d. 1789)'s descendants besides those of John (d. 1798)? Specifically we would like to know if our Samuel, b. ca. 1780 by census, who was in Barren Co. ca. 1830, fits into this line elsewhere? Wilda McMurry
