Don, Do you have anything about any of these people going to PA? There is a Fletcher McMurray in my family. Don, is the William McMurray , Revolutionary veteran, of Georgia, mentioned anywhere in the book? I still can't get back to which Murry/Murray, Murrey, and the Mc/Mac variations on the name! There is a copy of McMurry Family in the Genealogical reading room (Jefferson Building) of the Library of Congress. Unfortunately they will not do an inter-library loan, you have to go to Washington, D.C. to read it. As I recall, I first saw the book in the Huntington Beach, Calif. library in the late 1980's. This is how I found Marilyn Bone and obtained my copy of her book. You might check with your local library, many now participate in inter-library loan programs. If that doesn't work, let me know and I'll look up names for you. I am most interested in this family info. You can email me direct at Croy1238@aol.com I am most interested in the Samuel McMurry. I think i desc. from the one that died in Rutherford Co NC after comming from Va and going i think into Tn then back to NC. I beleive his son James McMurry and maybe other brothers went into East Tennessee before 1800 as James first shows up as James McMurry in the early records and his name later becomes James Murry, then James Murray. I do not have enough proof to prove this but this is my throry. I would love to know the early history and i will share what ever i have on this family. Thanks, Carol
Marilyn Bone sold me the last copy she had of "McMurry Family" and you are right about discrepancies and errors in the book. Unfortunately, very little documentation is included but the book is a good compilation of the early research by Earnest I. Lewis and W. Fletcher Guy McMurry. I have a lot of documentation now on the earliest McMurray men and their wives. Including, surprisingly, proof that the William McMurry in the book was actually William McMurray, the son of an older William McMurray. The older William lived with two his sons, Samuel and William, up on the Cowpasture River near Iron Gate east of Clifton Forge, Va. The other three sons were down on the floor of the valley. The family history supplied by Lewis & W.F.G. McMurray tells the story of William bringing his wife and five sons from Ulster to America prior to 1749 when we find the family scattered in the Shenandoah Valley (Augusta Co.) of Virginia. The family history is correct but off by a generation. If anyone is interested in the family from 1749 on let me know. I have several Samuels. My people were from Southwestern VA....I knew that! My Samuel was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth McMurry and was born in Sullivan Co TN in 1786. He married Jane Ramey about 1808. He raised his family in Scott Co VA and died there 6 Nov 1858. Jane was born about 1784 in PN. She died between the 1860 and 1870 census. The boundries are all so close together there. It is likely that our McMurrys came from North Carolina. We got the name of his parents from a death record. Someone else had a Samuel and Elizabeth and showed a daughter Mary. Times and places could have made Samuel and Mary brother and sister. Would love to chat with anyone who knows anything more. We'd love to know which Samuel and Elizabeth we came through and where they came from. Lisa
