The Facts About the 1886 Charleston, SC Earthquake from: http://www.csuniv.edu/Academics/Quake/scebrochure.htm The following list of facts about the 1886 Charleston Earthquake provides answers for the frequently asked questions about the most damaging earth- quake to ever occur in the eastern United States. Date of occurrence - August 31, 1886 (Tuesday). The main shock was followed by an aftershock two minutes later and many more shocks for the following three years. Time - 9:51 p.m. Eastern Standard Time Magnitude = 7.6 (Johnson, 1991) Intensity on Modified Mercalli Scale = X Two epicenters were reported by Dutton (1889). They were: Woodstock, a railroad stop on the Southern Railway leading into Charleston. This is 21 miles northwest of Charleston (Shedlock, 1988). Ravenel, a small town 23 miles southwest of Charleston, SC. Felt over 2.5 million square miles (From Cuba to New York, and Bermuda to the Mississippi). Approximately 110 persons lost their lives. Ninety percent (90 percent) of the brick structures in Charleston were damaged (Dutton, 1889). Damaging secondary effects were fires, ruptured water and sewage lines, damaged wells, flooding from cracked dam in Langley, South Carolina, and in the highest intensity area bent railroad tracks, throwing one train off the tracks. Dollar damage estimates in 1886 dollars were about $5.5 million. Approximately 70 percent of all the present day South Carolina Coastal Plain earthquakes have occurred within the highest intensity area of the 1886 Charleston earthquake. (Shedlock, 1988) There was some slumping on the Ashley River banks during the 1886 earthquake. Numerous craterlets or sandblows were formed in lower South Carolina. Some sandblows near the North Carolina border were found in the 1980s. Earthquakes do not open up cracks to swallow whole neighborhoods. In the 1886 Charleston earthquake many people panicked, but everyone gathered their wits and resources to recover from the devastating event. Some businesses reopened in two days. At Columbia, Augusta, Raleigh, Atlanta and Savannah, the fright and concern of all people were universal. In all of the large towns within 200 miles of Charleston, houses and other structures were damaged. Scientists are searching to determine the cause of the 1886 Charleston earthquake. The geologic fault or faults causing the 1886 earthquake and the small earthquakes in South Carolina today cannot be seen on the surface of the earth. The fault(s) are buried under deep (several kilometers) sediments.
It seems to me that the information in the post below could be of value to someone researching in this area. Leslie K. ----- Original Message ----- From: Sherrie Zabinski To: earlyamerica@mail-list.com Sent: 25 June 2003 The Charleston earthquake, the largest ever on the Eastern Seaboard was on August 31, 1886 and would have register between a 7.5 and an 8. It was massive and as you said, it came not only after the WBTS, but also after 15 hard years of Reconstruction as well. It was a horrible time for the city for almost a 100 years after the WBTS. The name of the fault is the Woodstock Fault, ending in Woodstock, NY. When it struck Charleston it was so powerful that it rang church bells as far North as Philadelphia.

The book was compiled by folks with very good hearted intentions, but there are major errors for the earliest generations, so you might be better off doing research from scratch.
There was the following connection to a McMurry in Howard Co., MO., posted in the Howard Co. queries. I don't believe E.L. posts anymore; however, this Jane was dau. of John and Mary McM of Barren Co., KY. John was quite possibly from the Augusta Co. McM's. How has not been determined. Do not know if your McM's could have desc. from these B.C. McM's, but John d. ca. 1798, wife Mary remarried to James Woods but she d. before younger chn. grown. John and Mary's son Samuel was guardian of younger children. No known marriage for Samuel, who d. ca. 1820. He and his brother Washington (probably G.W.) were in War of 1812 but their records could not be found when I requested them. No marriage known for "Washington," either, but there's a G.W. there in 1840, married, with children. Third brother James was in charge of Samuel's estate when he d.; James m. first a Gassaway, I believe 1826, then a Reed, 1834. Jane, in the item below, is one of two daughters; the other m. a Jenkins in Barren Co., KY. I do not know anything further of this family, except that families of these names, inc. the Woods family, belonged to the Mill Creek Presbyterian Church, with a number of families from Augusta Co., VA. I believe that church wound up in Metcalfe Co., with county divisions. The county seat of Barren Co., KY, is also Glasgow, of course. There may have been quite a community of Barren Co. transplants in Howard Co. I am interested in anyone having any information on Samuel MADDOX Jr., b. 1790 in MD and d. after 1850 in Glasgow, Howard Co, MO who m. 1815 in Barren Co, KY to Jane MCMURRY, b. 1792 in Barren Co, KY, Everett Littlefield--Thu Aug 13 17:20:05 1998 Wilda McMurry

In my G-Gran's Susie (2nd child)? it stated that her parents were John Albert and Amanda Black McMurry.. I found the different spelling in the State Archives of Mo. with the birth of John and Manda's 3rd child (1884) parents listed as John A. McMurray and Manda J. (Black) McMurray, Howard Co. Susan's first child (Arthur Kincannon) was born in Sturgeon, Mo.....His first child (my mother) was born in Paris, Mo. I guess I will veer and check out the McMurry's in Blount, Tn........there was a Census that had the two families of Black/ McMurry's. > Thanks for your info from Paris....appreciate it. > Sandy
