Ben, guess I have to rat out Don McMurray. You'll remember he moved from VA to Utah, they now have a B & B there. I believe this email address will work, if not, I can give you another. don@storybookbnb.com Wilda McMurry
There is some info in your post which connects to the Rutherford Co. McMurrays. Don McMurray, a researcher from VA has established that some of the McMurray's who came to NC from VA with Thomas McMurray were his nephews. I think that William McMurray was one of these, but I must check my records further to be sure. The McMurrays did come to America from Ireland but at least two generations back from William and Samuel in Rutherford. I am going to check more on your info and see what I can turn up. You might want to locate Don McMurray at don@norrishouse.com and he can probably give you more info on the McMurray's from VA.
Any possibility of a connection to this brick wall? Mary Ann (Polly) McMurry (b. 28 Nov 1803 TN, d. 11 Mar 1865 Upshur county, TX) m. 7 Oct 1824 Dickson County, TN, to Lemuel READ. (Family tradition says came from Ireland at age 3 - raised by brother when parents died.) 1850 census: age 44 1860 census: age 57. I believe that she may be the daughter of Thomas McMurry and Agnes or Nancy Flack. I found court records that show her as a minor orphan 2 Oct 1820- Robert McMurry guardian. She would have been 17 at the time. In the same court record: Cynthia McMurry minor orphan 2 Oct 1820 - James McMurry guardian; Sally and Washington McMurry minor orphans 2 Oct 1820 - William McMurry guardian. Are guardians older siblings or uncles? She used the names of these siblings and/or uncles to name some of her 12 children: William Thomas, Washington, Sarah Jane, James Robert, and Nancy. One of her grandsons was Robert McMurry Read. Can anyone help? Florence H. King fking@pipeline.com

I LOVE to look thru that stuff. I mean it is the actual will's, deed's marriage license/bonds. Those papers aren't copied or anything. You get to touch the same paper they touched! I had a friend to go and look at the archives. She said this lady was looking at some old stuff and a hair fell out. She said, oh I have a 200 year old hair...<grins> Those old documents are made on foolsap, parchment paper. Its amazing. The best thing you could do, is go to the Raleigh Archives. You will find ALOT of good finds. I hope to go back soon.

Hi kwood. Thanks for the info, but that woudn't be the Mary I'm looking for. The Mary I need was the Mcmurry daughter that married Josiah Means. How in the world did you come across these wonderful old documents? They must have some terrific stuff in them. E

Send me an email address and I will attach a file. Have not been able to connect James McMurray yet. This McMurray line used the old naming patterns extensively and everybody had a Samuel, William, James, John, etc. Makes tracing them very very difficult. Also have some limited info on a McMurray line from Oglethorpe Co.GA which appears to be somehow related to the Rutherford Co. McMurray's (spelled McMurry). Will share this also. Ben Callahan
Dorles, Mary McMurry's will was in Rutherford County, North Carolina.
Am researching a Samuel Mcmurray who settled in Scott county, Virginia in the 1780s, he married a Jane Ramey from Pennsylvania. All we can find is that his father was Samuel Mcmurray married to Elizabeth, last name unknown. Is there a possibility that this could be our line? We have hit a dead end. Elmer, I also have a will of a Mary McMurry. She left everything she had to her daughter Sarah. The will was made November 19, 1832. Mary says: First, I give my sole to God. and my body to mother dust and after my just debts and burial expenses is paid. I give and bequeath the remainder of my estate real and personal unto my daughter, Sarah McMurry. And I hereby make and ordain my worthy friend David Thompson executor of this my last will and testament in witness where of. I have hereunto set my hand and seal the date above writen. In the presents of us. John Thompson Edward M. Quinn Mary McMurry's mark. recorded: September 1833. Book F, page 161
I may have missed something. Where was Mary McMurry's will recorded? What county and state?
