Does anyone on the list know of any biographies written about the McLoughlin Brothers who were publishers of childrens' books in the late 1800's?

Hi Gerry, thanks for the tip. We do know that he died in Washington, D.C. So I will start there. Thanks again. Jane
Perhaps, if you know where he died, you could get his death certificate. That should tell you where he was born, how he died, etc. This site has info about getting various records: http://www.vitalrec.com/ Best of luck, Gerry McLoughlin NY, USA -----Original Message----- From: janeness13@juno.com [mailto:janeness13@juno.com] Sent: Thursday, April 20, 2006 7:20 PM To: MCLOUGHLIN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Hi, My name is Jane Elspeth Jones (nee Faulhaber). My grandfather's name was James Bernard (Butler) McLoughlin. I have actually found a record of his burial in Arlington National Cemetery on January 30, 1946 as he was a Major in the Army during WWII. He was also, according to family oral history, an international lawyer and had a law firm in New York with his brother Hugh. His family migrated from Ireland to Canada, where he was born (Nova Scotia I believe) and then to the United States. His father, Christopher H. McLoughlin came through Ellis Island, but according to the records he was already a naturalized citizen. Since I can't find any other records from Ellis Island about this family I'm assuming that they migrated to the U.S. through the U.S./Canadian border. This would put them on a St. Alban's list. However, the only actual documentation I've been able to find about James is his burial record. Everything else is heresay. I would love to be able to find hard documentation as pertains to my grandfather as it would mean the world to my mother. Thanks for any help.

Hi everyone, I'm wondering if anyone has come accross information about a Valentine McLaughlin (or variant spelling) that lived in Lehigh County Pennsylvania. He was born about 1829 in Ireland (I don't know the county) and had a wife named Sarah. She was born about 1831 in Scotland (I don't know where). They may have had a son named Thomas who was born in Scotland about 1849. Naturalization papers from Lehigh County from 1860 state that Valentine immigrated to the United States in 1852. He lived in Slatington, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania and was a laborer. He and Sarah had the following children in Slatington: John (b. 1856), Mary (b. 1860), Peter (b. 1864), and Sarah (b. 1868). Sarah died about 1892 and Valentine died in 1896, both were still living in Lehigh County. This branch of my family has given me all sorts of problems, many of which stem from the unkowns about Valentine and Sarah's time in Ireland and Scotland. The only thing that has been a little bit helpful is that m! y Dad always called the family "Scotch - Irish" and the fact that my Dad's family has a strong history of Presbyterianism. That leads me to believe that Valentine was one of the Ulster Scots, but I have no basis for that other than assumptions made by my Dad and I. I don't know where they emigrated from, or where they were married. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! ~Michael Messinger~
I found the following book at a book sale: PEOPLE'S PADRE, an autobiography by Emmett McLoughlin. Copyright 1954. It is about the Phoenix, Ariz. Catholic priest, Emmett McLoughlin who left the priesthood in 1948. Lots of photos. If you have an interest in this book please e-mail me OFF the list. Joan
Many thanks to all the kind people who responded to my query. I have now found Fred was born in Derby not Duffield, his father was Edwin and not Edward and there are two new great aunts I'd never heard of. So much for family stories! Now I can send for some certificates and start moving along the line. I did have a problem finding McLoughlins in the 1881 census in Family search. I couldn't find any! Does anyone know what I might have done wrong there? I am looking for traces of my grandfather who was one of the seven children of Edward McLoughlin b. 1866 and Jane Garton b. 1867. Edward was a blacksmith who worked for a while on the Chatsworth estate. Jane's parents were Alfred, a quarryman, and Martha. My mother, Fred's daughter, is sure he was born in Duffield, but the registry office there cannot find his birth certificate. Any ideas would be appreciated.
