Hi all, I am interested in speaking to any Mackintosh researchers who have come across a Mackintosh family using the names Mc Coil Van, McAlvain, McIlvain etc. Not having Gaelic myself I understand it effectively means son of Fair Donald. My family were closely connected to the Brodies of Lethen on whose estate they lived throughout the 17th and 18th centuries and whom they served in senior roles e.g. as Factor. The suggestion is that the first of this family was an illegitimate or younger son of a Mackintosh of Mackintosh from Moy and certainly they held high status with children having members of the Brodie, MacPherson of Ballindalloch, Campbell of Cawdor and other related families as witnesses/godparents. They lived mainly in the Ardclach parish of Nairn which of course bounds on the south with Mackintosh lands.
