You probably will have received this from other lists you are on so sorry for the repetition in that case. John McIntosh -----Original Message----- From: announce@mail.rootsweb.com [mailto:announce@mail.rootsweb.com] Sent: Saturday, 12 August 2006 11:44 a.m. To: LIST-ANNOUNCE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RootsWeb Mailing Lists are being Updated Dear RootsWeb mailing list subscriber, We are excited to announce that in the coming weeks, the RootsWeb.com mailing lists will be moving to a new list management system. Why? The new list management system offers updated technology, better spam control, and more efficient hosting of the lists. When? All the lists won't be updated all at once. In fact, once we start it will take us about two weeks to complete the process. We've posted the additional details about the update and a current update schedule at the link below. http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html This page can also be found by following the link found on http://lists.rootsweb.com. If there are any changes to the schedule, we'll update this page to let you know. How will it Affect You? Your current subscription(s) will automatically transfer to the new system so there will be no need to re-subscribe to your list(s), however, because the sending and receiving of list email will be handled by a new system, you may notice a few changes to your list(s). Digest subscribers will notice a small difference in the layout, volume and issue numbers of the list digests. The "-L" is being dropped from the "official" list name. This means the "from" address your mailing list emails come from will be slightly different- ListName@rootsweb.com vs. the current ListName-L@rootsweb.com. You may have to adjust your spam filters or put the new address on your "accept" list to prevent it from being caught in your "junk" folder. This sounds like a big change, but it doesn't have to change the way you use the list. Here's why: - You will still be able to send messages to the list using the "ListName-L@rootsweb.com" email address you use today. Additionally, you can choose to drop the "-L" and send your messages to ListName@rootsweb.com. Both addresses will work after the list has been migrated. - You will still be able to subscribe and unsubscribe to the mail or digest mode by sending your request to ListName-L-request@rootsweb.com or ListName-D-request@rootsweb.com as you do today. You will also be able to unsubscribe from the mail or digest mode by sending your "unsubscribe" message to LISTNAME-request@rootsweb.com. The tools that list administrators use to manage their list will also be changing. If you are a list admin, you will be contacted in an additional email on Monday with more details and a link to a tutorial. We're excited about the improvements to the lists because we feel confident that they will ensure that the mailing lists continue to run smoothly for years to come. We appreciate your patience while we make this transition and hope that the RootsWeb mailing lists will continue to be a valuable tool in your genealogy research. Thanks, The Rootsweb Staff ********************************************** You received this message from RootsWeb as a one-time email notification of upcoming changes to the mailing list(s) you subscribe to. -- No virus found in this incoming message. I did have that, and in fact got my birth year info on Barbara from that but now I don't know how to locate her parents and there is no marriage record in Ontario. Could be they were married in Quebec (learning my history here with the fact that they splilt). Very frustrating. I am relatively sure that two other McIntosh's, Isabella & Helen (or Ellen) married another one of the Rankin sons. One after the other one died (he married sisters or cousins?) but we can't determine their parentage for sure either. You can contact me at lynn-cunningham@redwoods.edu THANK YOU!

I also joined a Scotland's People site but don't get a lot there. I did order from them a birth record of a Barbara McIntosh, got 2, but I can't say for certain it is mine because I don't have anything for sure to link to it. I have a LOT of Rankin info, thanks to another message board posting and meeting a cousin who filled in lots of gaps back to Scotland. I filled in his one big gap with my line too:-) The McIntosh line though has totally evaded me. I will look at the site you provided and see what I can find. Where are your McIntosh's from? lynn-cunningham@redwoods.edu in California, USA

Barbara McIntosh was born about 1824 in Kinggussie, Invernessshire Scotland and married Hugh Rankin in Canada (someplace) about 1840(?) their first child Donald DH Rankin was born 1/8/1843 in Godmanchester, Huntingdon County, Ontario. ANY HELP on this line is so much appreciated and so needed. Thank you in advance if you can help.
Baillie is historically the title of a Scottish magistrate who presides in a burgh court and is elected to that station by the town council from among the councillors. Being a Baillie was often a stepping-stone to becoming Provost, the Scottish equivalent of the English Mayor. My late father was both in Blairgowrie, Perthshire. I don't think your ancestor would have changed his name to Provost. He would have been known as "Provost" in the same way as Bush is known as "President". The family ended up in Hempstead County, Howard County and some migrated to Texas. I have Tollette relatives who are descendents of the slaves. The all black town of Tollette, Arkansas was named after Steve Tollette who was one of the slaves. They use a different spelling of the last name. On the 1870 census it seems the blacks and whites spelled their last name Tollet (or, that is how the census person spelled it). Your name is familiar. I may have contacted you before. Didn't you know the Nashville, Arkansas Tollet's? Take care, Denise Hi Denise: Thanks for contacting me. I don't know that family, but what you have said is fascinating. "Tollette" is obviously of French derivation, the "ette" at the end giving it away. I'd bet that somehow the family line either traces back to Lousiana or right along the Missisippi River when the French controled that area. If the family is Catholic, that is a good clue. My McIntosh family is from Scotland by way of Londonderry Ireland in the 1740's. The Tollette family in America certainly predates that. Best regards and good luck with tracing this line. Steve
