    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: McIntosh, M'Intosh, MacIntosh, Mackintosh, Bartie Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mcintosh/1522/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Looking for any info on Robert McIntosh born 1774 in Perthshire, Scotland. His father was a William McIntosh. Supposedly William was closely connected to one of the Clan Chiefs of the Clan Mackintosh. Anne Barry, grand daughter of Robert's son William, thought that Robert's father William was the son of Robert Mackintosh and Anne MacQueen. Another relative thought that William was a grandson of Alexander Mackintosh (d. 1781 Newburgh, Fife)whose oldest son Aeneas later became Chief. Alexander's 2nd son, William was baptized 11 July 1756 in Newburgh, Fife. Obviously there have been some oral traditions that Robert had some family connection to the Chiefs of the Clan Mackintosh, I'm looking for other relatives/descendants that would have additional information or records that can help clear this matter up. I am especially looking for a family bible, either one that belonged to Robert and his wife Agness or their children. I have searched and searched and have not been able to find a suitable baptism for Robert.nIn Ira Beattie's research he says that Robert was born 3 October 1774. Robert's tombstone in New Mills, Restigouche, New Brunswick says that Robert was a native of Logierait, Perthshire. Also his name is spelled M'Intosh. If Robert had a close connection with the Chiefs it is possible that Robert was baptized as an Episcopalian because the Chiefs of the Clan Mackintosh were Jacobite supporters and many of them were Episcopalian. Robert married Agness Bartie in Errol, Perthshire on December 5, 1802. Their children are as follows: William (1803 Errol), Robert (1805, Errol), Joseph (1808 Craiglochie), Hugh (1809), John (1810 Craiglochie), David (1812 Kilspindie), James (1814 Kilspindie), Alexander Saunders (Lochmill), Peter (1818 Lochmill), Agnes (1820 Lochmill), Euphemia (1823 Lochmill), George (1824 Lochmill), Thomas (1827 Lochmill). Robert and Agnes emigrated to Restigouche county, New Brunswick in June of 1833, William and David emigrated in 1839, Alexander in May of 1833 and all of the other children, except not sure where Joseph and Hugh ended up. Robert died Dec 12, 1846 and Agness died in 1863. They are buried in New Mills, Restigouche, New Brunswick. Any help on Robert's parentage and lineage would be appreciated as well as any other info and family records.

Surnames: McIntosh Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mcintosh/1521.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Greetings again Michele: In you post, you asked if the author of an earlier message knew who Jesse's father was. I believe Jesse's father was a Frank McIntosh born about 1770 in Culpeper County, Virginia. That is all I have ever seen posted about him. Frank's only child that I have seen mentioned in any genealogy posting is the Jesse you refer to in your message. I have not seen any records identifying Frank's spouse other than that he supposedly married in 1792 in Culpeper to an unknown woman. Do you happen to have any information about this Frank McIntosh in your Virginia records? Some people believe Jesse's father was a Nimrod McIntosh, but I have never seen any solid evidence to support that relationship. Part of the evidence, which supports Frank as Jesse's father, is a handwritten genealogy record prepared by and signed by W. F. McIntosh on 19 April 1900. I have a copy of this record in my possession. I have also seen the original of that record, when I took my son and grandson to Irvine, Kentucky, in 1992 to meet with one of W. F.'s descendants Arvin T. McIntosh who had been given many of the McIntosh records including the handwritten report. Arvin and his wife and son are now deceased, but the genealogy records he had are still available. It is my strong opinion that this is the time and place to put an end to the debate about whether Frank or Nimrod was Jesse's father. To do this properly, I believe some background on W. F. McIntosh and his family and his ancestors back to Frank McIntosh is needed to help us understand the relationship of W.F. McIntosh to his grandfather Jesse and his great grandfather Frank. This post will be lengthy, but hopefully it will dispel any rumors and gossip and half-truths about a Nimrod McIntosh being Jesse's father. I would suggest you sit back, relax, have a cup of hot chocolate in your hand, and read the following part of this Post when you are not distracted by even the slightest sounds in and around your home. W. F. McIntosh was born in 1847 in Estill County, Kentucky as William Frank McIntosh the son of Balis (Bayless) McIntosh who was born on 22 September 1822 in Bristol, Sullivan, Tennessee. On 10 March 1842, in Estill County, Kentucky, Balis married Elizabeth Matherly who was born in 1821 in Fayette County, Kentucky. Balis' parents were the Jesse McIntosh we have been discussing and his wife Rebecca Jane Glover. Jesse was born on 29 January 1793 in Culpeper County, Virginia. On 6 August 1816 in Bristol, Sullivan. Tennessee, Jesse married Rebecca Jane Glover who was born on 6 April 1800 also in Bristol, Sullivan, Tennessee. Both Jesse and Rebecca died in Estill County, Kentucky. Michele, I wanted you and the others to have all this background information for two reasons, namely (1) because it will support what I am going to say about the handwritten record and (2) if you ever do any McIntosh family history research in Culpeper County, Virginia, you will have enough information and background on Jesse's descendants to assist you in finding the records for his father whom I believe is Frank McIntosh. Now let us summarize what I believe is important to us in all this discussion about Frank McIntosh and his descendants. First, I believe the fact that Jesse was born on 29 January 1793 in Culpeper County, Virginia is connected to Frank's marriage date in the previous year of 1792 in Culpeper and in the fact that Frank himself was also born in 1770 in Culpeper. I believe the next item of importance would be the handwritten record signed by W. F. McIntosh on 19 April 1900. It is clear that this handwritten record was prepared for the sole purpose of having a permanent record of all the genealogical data then available about Frank McIntosh and his descendants. I will now quote from that Record. Any words in parenthesis are mine. The record begins with, "A family record kept by W. F. McIntosh, son of Balis McIntosh, who was the son of Jesse McIntosh, who was the son of Frank McIntosh. Now for record of Jesse McIntosh's family. He married Rebecca Glover. He was Borned (sic) January 29 -- 1793." This is end of the first "paragraph" in the record, which I have quoted in its entirety. W. F. then continues, "His (Jesse's) wife Grandmother (this would have been W.F.'s grandmother) Borned (sic) April 6 -- 1800. Their children John McIntosh ... June 15 -- 1817. (the periods = ... in this last sentence and which continue from now on in the record likely represent the word Borned which is on the line just above the periods.) Frank McIntosh Borned (sic) Aug 6 --1818. Madillow .... ... March 3 --1830. (The four periods after the word Madillow likely represent the surname "McIntosh" which is written on the line just above the periods. The three periods, as stated above, are likely the name Borned (sic) which, once again, is written on the line just above the periods.) Balis My father .. (For McIntosh) ... Sept 22 -- 1822. Louisa (no periods) April. Nelson .. .. March 1 -- 1825. Elizabeth McIntosh Borned (sic) Nov 18 --1827. WSI (stands for William Stewart Irving) .. .... Dec 4 -- 1829. Mulvina ... ... Oct 31 -- 1831. Rebecca .. .... May 15 ! -- 1833. Jesse Jones .. .. Nov -- 22 -- 1835. Naomi Jones .. .. Nov -- 22 -- 1838. Pleasant Bush .. .. Nov -- 3 -- 1840." The Above is the Most authentic I can find. Recorded by W. F. McIntosh this April 19 -- 1900." When W.F. ends his report by saying, "The Above is the Most authentic I can find," he seems to be saying, "I have been looking at all the records I can find about my ancestors, and I believe the one I have used in this report is the "most authentic." This indicates me there were other records for him to use. It also indicates he probably had some of these records in front of him while he was writing his report. This would make sense, because it is unlikely W. F. could have retained in his memory all the data in his handwritten record, even though he was only fifty-three years of age when he wrote it. He died about eleven years later. One last aspect of this handwritten record needs to be discussed. After the last sentence that I have quoted above, the report continues, "Now this Balis McIntosh family Record. He was Borned (sic) Sept 22 - 1822. Elizabeth Matherly was Borned (nothing written after Borned.). They were married (nothing after "married.) Silas McIntosh was Borned (sic) March 11 - 1843." That is the end of the one-page report that I have in my possession and which I have quoted in its entirety. What do we make of this last entry. It appears W. F. was in the process of tracing the genealogy of his grandfather Jesse McIntosh through all of Jesse's children and grandchildren and possible beyond those persons. I do not have the remaining pages of his genealogy report, so I cannot speculate about what is on them. Nonetheless, it appears to me that the second page would continue with the names and birthdates of Balis' children, followed by the names and birthdates of Jesse's other children and their families or more likely by the report of only W.F.'s family with the names and birthdates data about his own children. If we had all the documents that W. F. had in front of him, we may have been impressed about how detailed his genealogy report was meant to be. This first page is only the tip of the iceberg. I asked the McIntosh family member who gave me the copy of the above handwritten record if they would investigate among other members of their family and extended family to see if the remaining pages of W. F.'s records were available. They did check and told me they could find nothing more. I will give you one further bit of evidence to support the statements that Frank McIntosh and not Nimrod McIntosh was Jesse's father. This evidence comes from the 1987 story in the Estill County Tribune. The Editor Tracy R. Patrick wrote an article entitled "McIntosh History." The article contained a picture of Balis and Elizabeth Matherly McIntosh and their grandson, Walter Burton. In this article, Mr. Patrick begins a series of articles about the different McIntosh groups who came to Estill County. He says the report had taken six years to finish. In the article the Editor says, "This week we will give information on the family of Jesse and Rebecca McIntosh. Jesse McIntosh was born 26 January 1793 (please note this date is different from the date of Jesse's birth in W. F. McIntosh's handwritten Genealogy Report which has Jesse born on 29 January 1793) probably in Virginia, THE SON OF FRANK MCINTOSH (emphasis added). He married Rebecca Glover, born April 6, 1800. Children of Jesse McIntosh are listed as follows." This introductory paragraph is then followed by 13 separate-numbered-paragraphs, which list all the children of Jesse and Rebecca, their birthdates and locations, when they married their spouses, the birthdates, and places of the spouses and of the marriage, and the names of the children who were known to be living at the time the article was written in 1987. In my humble opinion Mr. Patrick knew more about the history of the McIntoshes in Estill County than anyone else living at that time. The statement he made about Frank McIntosh being the father of Jesse McIntosh, can in my opinion, be taken at face value, even without the handwritten report of W. F. McIntosh and all the other evidence which supports the relationship between Frank and Jesse. Again, Michele, do not you just love short posts! I believe I will take about a three-month sabbatical before I come back to this thread. By that time everyone on these message boards should have finished their "Letters to the Editor" of Ancestry.com and I will be banished to the world of spirits, where I can enjoy a great family reunion with all the other McIntoshes who have ever lived, all the way back to Adam and Eve! Thank you Michele! Your friend, Jim

Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mcintosh/1521.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Jim, The reason for the post was to try and connect the three McIntosh groups, as they lived close together. I descend from James and Adeline (group 3), and I believe that the James in Group 3 may be the child of William L. in Group 1, but it's only an assumption based on their close proximity and the name "James". The James in Group 1 born abt. 1770 is the father of William L. I have a microfilm copy of his death record. It lists the informant as William L., son. The death date was April 24, 1855, 86 years old, died of old age. It also states in the death record that James was the son of Daniel. There is a record of a Daniel McIntosh living in Prince William County VA in the mid to late 1700's, so this is probably the same Daniel. Consort of James was listed as Elizabeth and his occupation was listed as "Gunsmith". The James in group 3 married Adeline in 1848 and had five sons, Lucian, William, Crawford, Joseph and James, and one daugther, Sallie. James died in 1865 as a prisoner of the Civil War. I have a ton of info on this family, but no proof of the father of James. I have no information on Rachel, or any of the McIntoshes in group 2. They all lived in the same household and may or may not be connected to the other McIntoshes. Let me know if you can add anything to this ok? Thanks, Michele

    3. Good morning Michele. You do have a good List to chase. Our McIntosh's came out of an area called Kirkmichael in Perthshire, Scotland along way back from the dates you have mentioned. You will probably be aware that "James" was a popular christian name for the sons and was often passed down from the Father to the oldest Son, which forces one to be alert to strange Birth dates. We have many "James" in our bunch. >From our point of "McIntosh" view, the large family(8 children) left Perthshire area from 1820-1840, and our "James" came to New Zealand (which is our lineage), the other 7 children of that family, both girls and boys, disappeared. We think they could have gone via Canada. Back to your message, none of the other Names mentioned ring any bells with us. Please retain our contact details for the future. Good luck.
