    3. Hello Mark Welcome to the McIntosh list. Your posting will be a challenge as few of our discussions are of times these early. My own McIntoshs were from Glenurquhart in the late 1700s and early 1800s. By the 1851 census a lot of Glenurquhart McIntoshs had moved to Kiltality but this is 100+ years after the time you are interested in. I hope other can throw some light on your posting. Have any of you experts on the various cadet branches of the Mackintosh family come across a family living in Ardclach in Nairnshire on the Brodie of Lethen estate in the 17th and 18th centuries called McIlvain or the other assorted spellings like McAlvain, McCoill Van or other variations which my Gaelic speaking friends tell me means the “sons of fair Donald”. We have tracked down some living in Kiltarlity in the 17th century among the Frasers and Lady Belladrum is witness/godparent to at least one. My 6 x great grandfather Alexander McIlvain was Factor of Lethen at the time of the ’45 and his children and those of his brothers had almost exclusively members of the Brodie of Lethen, Macpherson of Invereshie, Campbell of Cawdor and Dunbar of Grange families as witnesses/godparents. His mother was a MacAndrew and his sister Janet was married to one of the Falconers and his cousins were the Macphersons of Ardersier one of whom was Factor at Cawdor after Valentine White who was himself godfather of Valentine McIlvain. The informed opinion is that the McIlvains were either a Cadet branch of the Mackintosh family or one of them was a natural son of a Mackintosh given their close relationship with most of the ruling families in the area. Can anyone shed some light on this for me from some recognised Mackintosh genealogies? Author: NighthawkOhio Surnames: McIntosh, Grenny Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mcintosh/1544/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Looking for more info on James McIntosh b abt 1812 in NY, wife Susan b abt 1813 also in NY. ON 1850 Warren Co PA census they had the following children: Elizabeth b abt 1836 in NY; Imogene b abt 1839 in PA; Harriet A. b abt 1842 in PA; Franklin b abt 1846 in NY. James's occupation listed as blacksmith. The daughter Imogene later married Robert Grenny and they lived in St Clair, Michigan, found there on 1880 census. The father James was living with them at that time, wife Susan not in the household, possibly had died by then. Looking for anyone who has researched this family and who has info on who the other children married and further info on the parents James and Susan. The son, Franklin might possibly be our ancestor. I am desperately trying to find more information on this family. I think by 1860 they had moved to Mina, Chautauqua Co New York. The son Franklin is then 14 yrs old and there are 2 younger children added to the family, 2 sons named Fayette b abt 1852 and Mare! nus b abt 1858. Not sure if this is the same family just a hunch. Anyone with further information or who can help please let me know. Thanks! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
