The family name was changed from Wood to Woods some time after the Civil War probably when a census taker or other scribe wrote the name Woods in place of the singular possessive form of the name Wood (Wood's). One of John Wood's sons was also named John Wood (m Ann Cromer 1829). His oldest son was Thomas Wood (m. Malinda Broughton abt. 1856). One of their sons was John Wood b. 1872 m. Eliza Jane Campbell 1905. One of their sons was William Thomas Woods (b. 1915); my father. For years I have searched for the origins of John Wood the immigrant. I have a photocopy of his signature, signed in its Germanic form on an indenture he made in 1825. I have several theories on what circumstances would have caused him to be in SE Kentucky when he was. I will be delighted to share them with any interested parties. Also, I would be very interested in connecting with anyone with knowledge of John Wood's origins.
