From what I have so far, (and what may or may not be fact); John McFarlane was born in Scotland. I think he came to USA via Jamacia. I believe somewhere along the way or in travels he met or was arranged to meet Sarah Williamson of North Carolina. They married and somehow got to Mississippi of where John McFarlane was issued an original land patent 10th of November 1840 for 40 acres in Franklin County, MS. John and Sarha had 9 children: John Paxton McFarlane born December 27, 1825 in Lincoln County, MS and died in same state August 21, 1916.( The death cert. is from where I get Sarah Williamson's name from). Elias McFarlane b. abt 1820 Mary McFarlane b. abt 1815 Alice McFarlane b. abt 1828 Jane McFarlane b. abt 1832 Elijah McFarlane b. abt 1819 and three unkowns: 2 boysin 1829/1830 /1 girl born abt 1813 John Paxton and Elias served in the Civil War, both of them are listed in Quinn's State Troops, Company E, both being ranked as PVT. John Paxton served from July 1862 to September 1862. Then, John Paxton is back on the roll from August 1863 to June 1864. He was listed as absent 25 December 1863 and dropped from the roll. John Paxton "rejoined May 8, 1864 with the train" and next listing is on a Roll of POW. I assume he was set free, as per his death certificate date of 1916. I hope to explore more of this Civil War connection as time permits. Sarah McFarlane of Franklin County, MS is listed on the 1840 Federal Census for MS as head-of-house.I'm not sure where John was, but he bought some land in November 1840. H-mmm. Sarah McFarlane is listed on the 1850 census as 50 yrs old with only Mary, Elias, Alice and Jane at home with her. Although Sarah McFarland's age on this census makes her a bit young to be a mother, it isn't/wasn't uncommon for girls of 13 and 14 to be bearing children. As it goes, I find on the 1860 Franklin County, MS census a "Sarah McFarland" aged 70, from South Carolina and a Mary McFarland aged 40 from LA, and a Lewis McFarland age 7 from MS all on the same page! If this Sarah is the same one at the start of my message, than she would be about 42 years old having her last baby, which wasn't/ isn't unheard of either. I am understanding from the generousity of others and their research, that Sarah later moved on to Louisiana, where she is on the 1870 Census. I have two listings for Sarah there: one in Rapides Parish and one in Claiborn Parish. I am not sure which one is her...if at all. This matter bears further investigation. My interst is in the John Paxton line. I make it a point to start at the present and work backwards, and try to document all information, or note websites. I will be most happy to hear your comments or questions.
