Surnames: McFarland Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/FG0.2ACIB/1015 Message Board Post: All right cousins, I have exhausted all my knowledge looking for the following data, including going through all the McFarland board postings. My grandfather was Lewis Harrison McFarland who settled in Oklahoma, whose father was Jesse Buffington McFarland Jr, who also settled in Oklahoma, who father was Jesse Buffington McFarland Sr. And then my line falls into a black hole. Jesse Jr served in the Civil War from Illinois along with his brother, William Marion. I can find nothing through any Illinois connection. It appears William moved to Missouri after the war and married an Emma. She applied for a widow's pension in 1883. I got tons on all of them BUT where did Jesse Sr come from???? I am beginning to believe in the cabbage patch theory of birth!!! Help!

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/FG0.2ACIB/995.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: You are saying George and Amanda had a son named James C. also.. hmmmmmmm wonder where that got that name.. I will have to dig a little deeper when I get the time. My James C. McFarland was born 1785 Augusta County, Virginia and died 1860 in Clinton Co. Kentucky ( Seventy Six KY,I don't know what this means really) As I have said before I don't know for sure which children really belonged to which mother or who were step children for sure they all used the name McFarland. Following are the names for his children there are 2 unknown names and 1 unknown birthdate listed) I am fairly sure the children with the names of Prichard were the children of Pricilla Mullinex Prichard. Her children were born between 1836 and 1848 and I am not sure where the step children and natural children started and stoped. Mary Ann 1805; unkonwn 1808; Elizabeth(Betsy)1810; John Wesley 1817 (mine); Nancy Jane' unknown 1823; Anna 1824; William 1824; (these two may have been twins or one a early year baby and the other a late year baby); James Evans 1825; Young 1829; Andrew Jackson 1832; Harrison 1833; Rebecca Prichard 1834; Levi 1836; Sarah J. 1837; Hester?; Richard Prichard 1838; Levina 1840; Thomas Prichard 1842; Deliah Tennessee 1848; Mathew 1848. I keep hoping someone can straighten these children and their mothers out for me, but I am going to have to make a trip to Tennessee and dig myself I guess and I really don't know if I can do it. Wesley's son Alexander Miller went to Indian with several of his cousins, my grandfather told me once, and joined Co I. 10th Indiana Calvary. I also found this info in the 1890 Special Census for Veteran in Smith County, Texas and his headstone is marked with the same information. I also have copies of his military cards. Sometimes I have to explain that because my father was 40 when I was born (in the 40's) it was my great grandfather not my great great grandfather that fought in the Civil War so I heard stories that my grandfather would repeat that his daddy told him.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/FG0.2ACIB/995.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Thank you for your reply. There maybe a connection between your McFarlands and our McFarlands, but it is not the one I have been looking for. George & Amanda were married July 19, 1839, in Greene Co., Tennessee. They had 4 children in Breckenridge Co., Kentucky and 4 children in Orange Co., Indiana. James C. was one of those children born in Indiana in 1849. Their son, George Washington,II, served in the Civil War in a regiment from Indiana. In fact, he was with General Sherman on his march to the sea. George & Amanda also had a son, John Wesley, who was my husband's great grandfather. He was another of the children born in Orange Co., Indiana.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/FG0.2ACIB/995.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Have you tried looking at Fentress Co. Records? My McFarland and Wood families were there since very early 1800's and the name McFarland was spelt according to the mood of the day, I suppose. I have seen McFarlin,MacFarlan, McFarlan, McFarlane, MacFarlane Mac Farland Mc Farland and so forth. The name of George Washington McFarland keeps ringing bells in my head but I can not find any records or notes on him in my files. My absolute for a fact ancestors were James C. McFarland and his son John Wesley McFarland and Elizabeth Adkins, their son Alexander Miller born in 1837 married Susanna C. Wood in 1859 and then after the birth of their first child and before the Civil War they moved to Indiana. James C. had about 4 wives and I would give a big "Yankee Dime" to anyone who could name which child belonged to which mother. As it was he married a woman with children already he gave them his name too. At least that is what it looks like to me. With John Wesley, mostly known as Wesley, I am not sure if his mother was Rebecca, Elizabeth or Caroline Rule. Rule is the only name I am really sure about and the other 3 names maybe one person. But like I said before, George Washington McFarland, keeps setting off the bells in my head. I keep looking at what I do have and find nothing. I may have lost something vital in my first efforts of research gathering a few years ago. Susie McFarland Lemin

His father, John William, was born McFarlin, but changed the spelling the last name at one point; but we don't know when or why. We have been to Greeneville in Greene Co, Tennessee, where George and Amanda were married and found only a marriage. We have been to Breckenridge Co, Kentucky, where George was born and came up empty handed. We have been researching for nearly 10 years now and would like to compare notes with you.
