I got my first information through a distant cousin Dorothy Chase a grand daughter of one of Alexander Millers daughters. I have go digging to be sure which one. LOL There is a lot of speculation on whom James C. McFarland's parents were but for the most part it looks like he MAY have been the son of Alexander and Lydia Priest McFarland of Augusta Co., VA. They did have a son named James C and the ages for him do fairly match. Alexander was the son of William (Penn Colony) and Elizabeth Gibson(VA Colony) As far as finding McFarland's in Georgia or Kentucky I am not surprised! In Oglethorpe, GA there are plenty in fact my aunt gets a giggle (as her and my dad's parents were McFarland and Snodgrass) McFarland St. crosses Snodrass Hill or something like that. James C. McFarland moved to Kentucky with his last wife and batch of children and Richard Crabtree was part of that batch. I just never pursued them as I had my hands full of my Alexander Miller (1839. The McFarland's did love to use a name over and over and over, that is for sure. It is when they threw in the odd name that gave me clues to finding the correct families, such as Delilah Tennessee and Barabry. Have you seen those names? Delilah Tennessee may have been Richard Crabtrees' sister.

In the early settlement of our country there were outposts and forts spread out all over for the protection of the settlers. The King had surveys done on the roads, paths, trails, and etc.and the surveyors put interesting spots on the map as ninety six, seventy six, 10 mile, 6 mile, and etc. This spot might be a trading post, a starting point of a creek system or something else. We were all told that an Indian maiden rode 96 miles from Columbia to Star Fort [ near present day 96] to warn her lover of an impending attack on the fort. Not true......96 was the mile marker from, if I remember correctly, Charleston. The whole district became known as the 96 district. I have a book with all of this explained and the original map. So, if you run into a town that is named a number, it is probably a mile marker from pre-revolutionary times. Now why Cowpens, S.C.......Six Killer, Ten Killer, and Two Killer, Oklahoma? Just thought you might be interested . Margaret

The answer lies in what I have just begun to do. Her son for some reason put all her work in box's and gave it to the archives in Nashville. It is on Microfilm as The Mable Harvey Thornton Collection. Microfilm 1040 12 Reels 35 Boxes. It is available on InterLibrary Loan from The TN State Library and Archives. I have been copying pages at a time in Roane County but it has been slow work for me. I am putting it on my pc but have not learned how to upload or download( what ever) it for you. As you can see I have only been doing this a year. I am putting it on My Family at Ancestry.com I already have almost 1600 people in the file. I have only scratched the top. If I could learn how to put my work where you could read it it would be wonderful. I am using a microfilm printer but it is still very hard to read. Do you know how many pages are on one reel? It takes me one whole day . I can only work on it sometime. If you cou! ld borrow the tapes at the library it would tell you all of it. The Roane County Herritage Commission bought a copy of the tapes. That is where I do the work in the Old Roane County Court House. It is nice to hear from someone who knew my sister. Betty Reed

McFarland is Richard Crabtree's father....I do have family group sheets on his children [sent to me by Jean Jennings]. I was hoping to find a clue to his origin in Owensboro, Ky while I was there but had no time to really look. Owensboro has a Crabtree Ave. that bisects McFarland Ave. very near the river and the Indianna Bridge. There is a huge book on Atkinsons, a nice one on Crabtrees and a folder for McFarland that has a few newspaper clippings. The Crabtree book has quite a few McFarlands some named James. I saw names that are familiar to the message boards like Hazelit [sp]. I just had no time. The librarian told me that they had a really nice Crabtree book but someone stole it. There is just too much coincidence to these three families being connected in Owensboro and Richard Crabtree's name for him not to connect to Owensboro somewhere.....whether it is through his father or someone else. I was hoping to find a McFarland who left Owensboro and migrated South to Fentress County.....had no time....The Atkinson book was Huge and hardbound. The lady who was working that day was connected to the Crabtrees and McFarlands but she was leaving as I arrived and was coming back as I had to run out the door in order to get to a baseball game on time. Alexander Miller and Wesley had to have been important names to the families for them to be used in several different families. Do you know whether or not Mabel Thornton published her work and if so where can I get it? thanks, Margaret
