    1. [McFarland] Origins of the surname McFarland
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: MacFarland, MacFarlane, McFarland, McFarlane Classification: Lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/FG0.2ACIB/1073 Message Board Post: Reposted from the Genforum Scotland forum >From The Surnames of Scotland" by Dr. G.F. Black MacFarland also MacFarlan, MacFarlane, MacFarlin, MacParlan, MacParland, MacParlane, MacParlin and MacPharlain These names are derived from Old Irish MacPharlain, meaning 'son of Parlan'. Early examples are Malcolm Mcpharlane, who witnessed a charter in about 1385. Duncan, son of Malcolm Makfarlane was on the receiving end of a charter in 1395. Andrew M'Farlane became a burgess freeman of Glasgow in 1577. Nimmo's "History of Stirlingshire" relates that the ancestor of the Macfarlanes of Kirkton was George Macfarlane of Markinch, 2nd son of Andrew Macfarlane, in the reign of James V (1513-1542). George sold the lands of markinch and went to settle in the North Highlands amongst his namesakes the Clan Macfarlane, also known in Gaelic as the M'Allans or Allanach, because of their descent from Allan Macfarlane, younger son of one of the lairds of Macfarlane, who had settled in Strathdon, Aberdeenshire several centuries before. From him are descended the families of Auchorran, Balnengown, Lismurdie, etc. and also several others in Braemar and Strathspey. Robert Macfarlane (1815-1883), born in Rutherglen, was for 17 years the editor of the "Scientific American". Many other spellings are given - Makfarland and Makferlande, 1546, M'Farlen 1603, Mcfarling 1668, M'Farling 1663, Makferlan 1529, McKfarlen 1728, McFerlane 1612 and MacPharheline 1610.

I have no evidence that my great-grandparents were Quakers, but I have found other Quaker lines in my family history that no one knew about. It's certainly possible that this is another case of that. I'll definitely follow up on that possibility. Alva & Ida were my dad's mother's parents, and my dad didn't know that side of his family much at all. That complicates matters for me, because I have very little background information to begin my search with. Thanks again! Angela :)

My father was, I think that might be my key. If your ggrandmother was documented by the Freinds Church, that might be a good place to look.

Her father was James Harris. I found out this information on her marriage license. She was married in Whitley County, Kentucky on April 22, 1879 in the home of James Harris. She was 22 at the time. I have been searching the census records and it looks as if Rebecca Mullis McFarland could have been her mother. I am assuming that the "Betsy" referred to in the 1860 census is her. According to her marriage license, she would have been born abt. 1857. In the 1850 census, James Harris and his wife are listed twice. There is a Joseph McFarland, 54, and a Margaret, 45, listed right after their names. Is this possibly her parents? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: McFarland, Cummins, Raney, Gibson, Copeland, Debo Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/FG0.2ACIB/1066 Message Board Post: BURNET BULLETIN, JULY 20,1944 RUFUS JACKSON McFARLAND (1858-1944) A BURNET COUNTY PIONEER CALLED ------------------------------------ Rufus Jackson McFarland,a pioneer of Burnet County, was called by death at the Shepperd-Allen Hospital in Burnet July 12th,1944,where he had been ill for several days. His funeral service was held July 13th in the Northington funeral Chapel, conducted by Rev.Robert H. James, Methodist pastor. Burial was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery of Burnet, with Bunk Gibbs, Eppie Debo, Frank Debo, M.McClure, Bud Moffitt and Vernon Greer as pallbearers. Mr.McFarland is survived by four daughters, Mrs.Adam Cummins of Agua Dulce, Texas, Mrs.C.B.Raney of San Antonia, Mrs.W.G. Gibson of Manteca, California, Mrs. J.W. Copeland of Pettus, Texas, three sons, King McFarland of Burnet, C.C. McFarland of Houston, Rufus McFarland of San Antonia, and one brother R.R. McFarland of Cleburne. His wife preceded him in death many years ago. Mr.McFarland was born April 9th 1858 in Burnet county, and lived in this section all his life. He was a law-abiding, honest man, and had many friends to regret his death. For the past several years Mr. McFarland had been totally blind, but he bore this affliction courageously and was always glad to have his old friends call and talk over old times with him. Upon the anniversary of his 86th birthday last April 9th, his children arranged a celebration for him at the Burnet Hotel, when many of his old friends called and paid their respects. Mr. McFarland greatly enjoyed the occasion, as did his children and the friends who dropped in for a few minutes chat. Jack McFarland was indeed a pioneer of Burnet county, his parents being among its earlier settlers. Until he was twelve years of age, Indians raided this section of Texas regularly murdering the people and stealing horses. No doubt Mr.McFarland witnessed the effects of some of these depredations, and could relate many of the interesting early day episodes of the county. Not many men and women who were in Burnet county during Indian times are alive, and soon all of them will be gone, with only the memories of them left, which should be reverenced always. (NOTE: Rufus J. McFarland was my gg grandfather) *Obituary courtesy of Barry Caraway*

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/FG0.2ACIB/1065 Message Board Post: My major brick wall is my g g grandmother Martha Adeline McFARLAND b. 17 Jan 1852 Belleville, St. Clair Co, IL d. 12 Jan 1933 Monroe Co, IL m. Nathan S. DURFEE on 21 Mar 1869 Monroe Co, IL. No additional info is known from their marriage documents. On Martha's death certificate the informant was her son-in-law John ALLEN, and he wrote for her father "don't know, b. don't know" and for her mother "--- CHURCH (or CHINCH?), b. VA". Martha's obituary provided no info on her parents. >From the book "The Descendants of Thomas Durfee of Portsmouth, R.I." by William R. IL So far, I have been unable to locate George or Senda/Syntha A. IL Jos 17 M b. IL McFARLAND, Martha 9 F b. IL Martha is listed with her husband Nathan on the 1880 Monroe Co, IL census which lists her father b. VA, mother b. KY. On the 1900 Monroe Co, IL census, her father is listed as b. IL, mother b. IL. On the 1920 St. Clair Co, IL census her father is listed as b. KY, mother b. KY. I'm not sure how or if this fits in, but found this entry on the 1860 Prairie du Rocher P. O., Monroe Co, IL census: CHURCH, Lewis 28 M Farmer b. IL Virginie 28 F b. VA Ausilla 5 F b.
