This is what I've surmised so far, and I don't have document validations for many of these theories: My ggggrandfather was Robert McFarland who came with his wife Jane to the US from Ireland on the Waltron which arrived on 13 April 1849. The ship departed from Belfast and arrived in New York. My gggrandfather, William McFarland, was born on the ship. William McFarland had two brothers born in New York: R. H. (Robert Jr.) McFarland, and John McFarland. William McFarland married Virginia Vreeland in New York and they lived i Jersey City, NJ. William passed away between 1880 and 1891 and Virginia remarried her brother-in-law John McFarland around 1901. William and Virginia had three children: Eva MacFarland Adams, Harvey Warren MacFarland, and Grace MacFarland. Harvey was my ggrandfather. Harvey married Adelaide Hillman and they had one son, my grandfather, Arnold Hillman MacFarland. R. H. McFarland, William McFarland, and John Adams (husband of Eva) were in the printing industry, and John was a baker. Harvey and Adelaide were employed at the Norwich State Hospital for the Insane in Connecticut. Arnold started out as a carpenter and eventually work for Connecticut Power and Light. Are there any other McFarland or MacFarland researchers that have family in the New York, New Jersey, and/or Connecticut areas?

Surnames: McFarland, Cooper Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/FG0.2ACIB/1081 Message Board Post: I have hit a definite brick wall! I am looking for my great grandfather in or around Panola County Mississippi probably in the late 1890's or very early 1900's. He married Annie Cooper in the 1890's. My problem seems to be that not knowing anything further - such as a middle name - I can't seem to find him. I have found his wife Annie living in her father's home (Rufus Cooper) on the 1900 census (Panola County, MS) with their first born - Lucius. It seems odd that Annie would list herself and Lucius with her father's household if they were just visiting. I do know that John and Annie were together later as the had two more children (both born in Sardis, MS I believe). The two other children's names were Walter Lester McFarland -my grandfather and Lena McFarland. I believe that John died before the 1910 census - which seems to make finding him all the more difficult. I have some estimated dates of birth and death for John and would be willing to investigate any possi! bilities for searching. If anyone out there is looking for this John McFarland and has a family they are looking at with a John McFarland as a sibling please contact. Any ideas for research are also very welcome!

First, if you're nearby you can physically go look at it and get the info. Otherwise you can see if there's a volunteer on the county or city mail list here at Rootsweb who can transcribe it for you. Last, you can order it from the county or state (each state is different). Usually the birth certificate has all the info on the parents, so then you could go from there. Census materials can be used for free at all Family History Centers, even if you are not a member of their church. Look in your local phone book, or check out their website at familysearch.org for the nearest center to you. I have also found the volunteers there to be wonderfully helpful, especially when you don't have a clue what to do next;o) Hope this helps. Sue

Hopefully, this lead will remove one of my bricks. I stumbled onto an item on another site from a few years ago that mentioned Elizabeth McFARLAND m. in TN to a Daniel Alexander RAGSDALE (1812 NC-1875 AR) in 1837, and that he/she/they were buried in Elm Springs, Washington Co. AR. My gr-grandfather was a D.A. Ragsdale b.1845 TN, who m. 1867 to Lydia Hopkins in Benton Co. AR. Both of her parents are also buried in Elm Springs. Census data indicates his parents were D.A.B. Ragsdale and Elizabeth. There's also land records showing Elizabeth had land in Benton Co. in 1891. Elm Springs is right on the County line between Benton and Washington Counties. Any info on Elizabeth McFarland and her spouse will be greatly appreciated, as would confirmation that my gropings for clues are close. Thanks. ...........Fred
