    1. Re: [MCF-ROOTS] The Drury Family
    2. Hey Patricia... Have ran into a few Drurys while working the Tattershalls and thier allied families, in Lincs,Berks and Wilts, but really did not take the time to root them out. Did you work any who were of the Thames Valley ? Since I found no blood links I moved on from the Drury line in Britian. Come to find out, over years of digging the Tattershalls, Mary and William of SMC, Mary who married John Jarboe, have good documentation through the Norman invasion. The first Tattershall in Britian Eudo son of Spirwic was one of William, I knights, being rewarded Tattershall, in Lincolnshire for his efforts. Not to mention, some documents write Eudo husband of William, I step sister... Needless to say, fun rooting. I'm a Jarboe rooter, years ago, seems to me that there were a couple of Jarboe/Drury, in KY, but I am a bit rusty. If there some interesting data pertain to those connection, may would be interested in a copy, or trade with the 4 volume Tattershall book that we have in draft. Best of luck.... > Dear Members, our second volume of Remember, The Drury Family is now > available. 3. Thumbs up for John Drury a "Rescusant". I warn all that when I start the family story around the campfire, that it is a very proud Catholic story that precedes them. It involves a deeper level of faith and courage than many would believe possible. My journey back in time started in Illinois but slipped across the border to Perry County, Missouri. It is there that I picked up the trail of the League of Catholic Families that left Maryland to because of a terrible oppression and a greater faith. Thank you so much for your work. I'm more than half way through Vol. 2 the *Drurys in Maryland and on the frontier*. Then we'll publish one more book: *Remembering the Haydens*, Vol. 3. *Remember, The Drury Family,* by Patricia Bishop Obrist and Robert W. Dora *Remember* is the story of the Drury family in England, from the years before the Norman Conquest to the time of John Drury, the Recusant (ca. 1530 –1598). As knights, the Drurys bore a shield with the coat of arms: *Argent, on a chief Vert, two mullets, pierced Or*. The family motto was “Remember.” But by 1581, Elizabeth I’s Penal Laws labeled John Drury a *Recusant* because he stood tall as a Roman Catholic in refusing to attend the Prayer Book services of the Church of England. He was convicted of treason and heavily fined. For centuries, the Drury men and women had lived, loved, and died as loyal English and reverent Catholics, a heritage that John Drury would not cast aside. To: <MCF-ROOTS@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <019001cb4c51$3f3b8b80$bdb2a280$@com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" My wife and I are going to be doing some driving around Kentucky during the next couple of weeks, and I am interested in seeing places that are connected with the Maryland Catholic Families migration to KY. While my own MCF families are Kidwell and Mattingly, there are a whole bunch of collateral lines as well, many of whom ended up in Daviess County, Indiana. I don't think there will be enough time to actually visit with anybody, and I doubt there will be much time to do any real genealogical research while I am there, but what I would like very much to do is see the places that my ancestors might have seen, and get a sense of the terrain. So, my first question is whether anyone has ever compiled a driving tour of the Maryland Catholic Families area of Kentucky? (I'm thinking that this is mainly Marion and Washington Counties, but would be glad to learn of others). Are there any "must-see" landmarks? I see places on the map with names like "Nerinx", "Loretto", "St. Mary's", "Holy Cross", "St. Francis", and "St. Catherine" and these sound like places that I ought to drive through to get a sense of the countryside. Does this make sense? While this may be an odd question, I've never been in that part of Kentucky before, and I've found in the past that the genealogy comes along a little easier if I've actually seen the terrain. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Sincerely, Geoff Brown Taconic, CT ------------------------------

    2. time to do any real genealogical research John Kracha Now visiting in: Rapid City, SD Home-based in: Chula Vista, CA I suggest that you include Nelson County. You have kin there too. Stop at the Nelson County Library in Bardstown and visit the Family History Room. Make contact with wonderful, volunteer staff and follow-up when you have the time. The locals visitor's bureau should be able to provide the detail maps that you need. Some names have changed so you need local input. My wife's family include Coomes, Mattingly, Hagan and bunches of others. Good luck!

Sincerely, Geoff Brown Taconic, CT

    3. Geoff, I think I would try to visit Nelson Co, check out this page http://www.visitbardstown.com/tourism/religion.html . The facilities at Nazareth and Gethsemini should be on your tour. Daviess Co KY is where my people moved to from Nelson Co, and you might check out http://www.ursulinesmsj.org/index.php . My Clark and Lilly families settled in this area. I love to visit the Kentucky room at the Daviess Co Public Library in Owensboro. 3. Hi, these are some names I found in Maes Life of Fr. Nerinckx. These sisters would be ones I am researching. There are many other surnames. *Names of Sisters who made final vows in 1820* *Place Convent Name Family Name Birthplace* Calvary Sister Mechtildes * Susan Hayden* Illinois, Louisiana Calvery Sister Catharine *Mary Drury* Nelson Co., KY Loretto Sister Martina *Margaret Drury* Bullit Co., KY Calvary Sister Susan * Sarah Drury* Nelson Co., KY Loretto Sister Frances * Maria Drury* Washington Co., KY Calvary Sister Reineldis *Elizabeth Hayden* Washington Co., KY Loretto Sister Aloysius *Elizabeth McAtee* Nelson Co., KY *The Life of Rev. Charles Nerinckx*, by Camillus Paul Maes, now on line at Google Books. p. 407 Father Nerinckx said of Sister Christa (*Christina Stuar*t) in 1819, when she died, while being the Sister Eldest (Superior) “Already before being a nun, she was reputed among all Catholics as the most pious and accomplished young lady then living in the country. I never saw one more attentive to religious duties than I have known her to be for eleven years in and out of the world. She died as she lived.” Maes, pp. 374-375. Best wishes! 2. Don't know if any of them are in a DNA program but there were about 12 O'Bryan researchers as part of this group back at the 1998 Reunion. I don't have an update as I am on the wrong end of the Nation (California) I can provide names and phone numbers (effective in 1998) if you like. This is about helping each other isn't it? The test calculates if you are related within 5 generations to someone else in the database; but it has the potential of going back 10 generations with less accuracy. The test is $293 with shipping and I have heard some really great results. My brother’s results should be in on June 7. Has anyone else on this List participated in this project yet? Have you had any luck? I am hoping for some hits on my 7th generation and earlier. This might get interesting with so many families intermarrying in Maryland and Kentucky.
