A friend sent this obit to me a couple of days ago which was printed in the Atlanta Constitution (I believe that's the name of the newspaper in Atlanta, GA). I thought perhaps it might be of some interest to someone in our group - hope it helps. Lawrenceville McElroy, 88, ran cafe Evelyn McElroy, 88, of Lawrenceville drove a motorcycle, played professional basketball and ran her own cafe for 25 years. She was capable of handling anybody, thought Sheriff F. Quill Sammon. In 1963, he named her the first female deputy sheriff in Gwinnett County, which had just grarted growing, said his nephew, Frank Sammon of Lawrencevill. "She was pretty free," he said. "She was just the type every woman would want to be. She did everything a woman could want to do." She did the cooking at Evelyn's Grill, sold grave markers at one time and lived to fish, he added. She died of cancer Sunday. The funeral is at 11 a. m. today at Wages and Sons Funeral Home, Gwinnett Chapel. (Written by Kay Powell) Evelyn sounds like she was quite a gal!!! She's DEFINITELY one of ours! :o) Jeannette L. McElroy
