My McElroy line that I first find is in Matoon, Coles Co, ILL. Starting in 1860 with James or John (it's different on different census) McElroy, age 36, born approx 1824 in Ireland, living with Bridget McElroy, his sister who is 22, born in Ireland. In 1870, James McElroy is now John McElroy, age 47 with Bridget McElroy, age 34 and now there are her children in the household, James & Patrick Welch, ages 10 and 8, both born in Ill, but no Husband for Bridget. In 1880, John McElroy now has 2 nephews James and Patrick Welch and niece Mary Welch living with him. No sign of Bridget, the mother of the Welch children and I have no idea where Mary came from?? States all the 3 kids were born in ILL. Patrick Welch came to Kansas City and married my great grandmother in 1889. That's all I know about the McElroy line. Donna Fisher

I am from the John and Frances Mackelroy line. I know nothing about the McElroys you mentioned. I am writing because my husband's family was from Oakland, Coles Co., IL. I worked a long time on Coles Co. before I discovered that his family came into neighboring Edgar Co. first. The Edgar Co. census taker on the 1850 census is the only one I have ever seen who asked what county folks were born in as well as the state. You might double check to make sure that your McElroys were not also in Edgar Co., IL.
